Dog pancreatitis: Is it from antibiotics? What diet and meds help?

Carpeofen is not recommended with pancreatitis as it can make the condition worse, in some severe cases steroids can be prescribed. i would recommend adding a few medications to what she is getting: Cerenia, Famotidine, Omeprazole. these 3 can help significantly. i would also recommend switching from Amoxicillin to Metronidazole. she of course needs to be on a special prescription low fat diet such as Royal Canin gastrointestinal low fat.

It may be the antibiotic or it could be discomfort associated with the pancreatitis. Report the vomiting to your veterinarian and consider a recheck exam. Your veterinarian may dispense an anti emetic to control vomiting as well as pain management.

Although to give you a specific answer I would need more informations (like concentration in the tablet, weight of your dog and exact name of the tablet - I guess it is named macrolone?- ), generally speaking it is unlikely to give any severe side effects that would require an immediate check up, a part from gastrointestinal ones like diarrhoea and vomiting. If she is on medications that were prescribed by your veterinarian for treatment of pancreatitis, then yes she should continue to receive her medications as long as she is eating. Pancreatitis is generally a painful condition so it is recommended to ensure that she receives pain control medications while her pancreas improves. Keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

Pancreatitis is an inflammatory condition so pain relief, fluids and antinausea medications are vital, oral medication is ok if vomiting can be controlled, if nit injectable and intravenous treatment is required. An ultra low fat diet is very important long term to reduce the severity and long term complications and scarring

I would expect for your vet to either prescribe or offer injectable antibiotics and anti-nausea medicine for a few days in a row. I love to use cerenia as the anti-nausea medicine as it is also a pain reliever. Your vet may choose this or something else and add in a different pain reliever if necessary. A lot of specialists don't believe antibiotics are necessary, but since a small percentage do get an infection in the pancreas, a lot of vets treat with antibiotics to cover their basis. Also you will want to make sure Coquine is staying hydrated. If he is well enough to be treated at home then your vet may want to have you come in daily for a few days to get some subcutaneous (under the skin) fluids to help keep him hydrated. If he simply has just pancreatitis and no other complicating factors then they usually improve quickly and do really well. I hope this helps!

With pancreatitis, it is typically caused by them eating something that they were not supposed too. Usually from human food. I agree that changing Shadow's diet to a bland diet and keeping him on antibiotics (not long term) will be beneficial for him. Pancreatitis can be serious and is usually painful. Most dogs do very well on exactly what your vet is doing while more severe cases require intensive treatment and hospitalization.
