My dog won't eat after injury. Why did the vet stop IV fluids?

She may not have a drive to drink if she received iv fluids during her procedures and you are meeting what she needs through her diet. If she is otherwise happy with normal appetite and energy level and no vomiting or diarrhea you can continue monitoring. If any of these change in addition to not drinking then that would be more concerning as dehydration could ensue. Poor Lucy! If she's not eating anything it's possible she may be in some pain. If your vet didn't prescribe pain medications, talking with them to see if that is an option may help Lucy feel well enough to eat. If she is on pain medications or other medications, these can sometimes cause some stomach upset. Offering a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken may help with minor tummy upset, however if she continues to refuse food or looks very sad and lethargic, scheduling a recheck with your vet to make sure there isn't anything else ongoing is best.

He may still be a little nauseous from the anesthesia or medications that he received. Call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may want to prescribe an anti-nausea medication to see if that helps. Continue to offer him fresh water and you could also try some boiled chicken and white rice to see if he will eat that.

It sometimes takes longer than 12 hours for a sick animal to get better. You will still have to try and hand feed her and syringe water into her if possible. If she does not start drinking after 24 hours, then your veterinarian may have to put her on iv fluids. Once she is hydrated she will likely feel less nauseous and will start drinking again and hopefully eating. Keep her comfortable, and tend to her like you would tend to a sick child. Give it some time.

The cause of the vomiting must also be established - parasites, foreign body, virus, etc. I would not recommend giving anything orally if your cat is still actively vomiting. I assume that your vet has examined your cat and performed some diagnostics if she has been hospitalized for IV fluids. Sounds like Thor had a major health issue. Poor guy. You don't need to give him anything special for hydration, just keep fresh water available at all times. If Thor was given fluids at the vet's office, he just might not need the water yet. I'd recommend putting out a fresh bowl now and measuring how much water you put in with a measuring cup, and checking what's left in 24 hours to see how much he's consuming. If it seems like less than usual, call your vet with an update and ask for their advice - he might need more treatment. Ideally, Timber should be physically examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. Abdominal x-rays should be done to rule out a partial or complete obstruction. IV or subcutaneous fluids can be given to rehydrate him if necessary. If he is vomiting, do not feed him. Fast him for 8-12 hours then try a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. You can offer very small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte, no more than a tablespoon or two at a time every hour. If the vomiting persists, stop and have him checked/rechecked by your vet.
