Why is my Jack Russell not eating food, only grass, but acting normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old | 15 lbs

My Jack Russell Terrier, who will be 2 in November to the best of my knowledge. He's a rescue. He has been experiencing episodes of not eating for days and he only wants to eat grass. This time his BMs are normal and he acts fine. In the past when this happens his BMs are normal to slightly constipated to loose/mucous stool. That time he was scooting his butt and 1 time it was nothing wrong per the vet 2 time she said his anal glands were a little impacted and she cleaned him. No scooting now!

Captain jack is really cute! I am sorry for his intermittent stomach issues. You may want to consider putting him on a probiotics. Also talk to your vet about ruling out any intestinal parasites, giardia, or other abnormal bacteria. He may also need to be on a diet for sensitive stomachs like science diet I/D. You can also add a small amount (1/2 teaspoon) of canned pumpkin to his food twice a day to help keep him regulsted. I hope this helps!
