Why is my Jack Russell not eating food, only grass, but acting normal?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bonnie. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. Being so young, she will easily become dehydrated if she doesn't eat properly. Her veterinarian will examine her and look for signs of illness. Fecal testing may be recommended. Parasites and intestinal infections are common in puppies and cause a low appetite. In the meantime, you can add warm water to her dry kibble to help soften it. Canned puppy food may be enticing as well. I hope this information helps!

It sounds like he probably has developed a touch of gastritis due to the pancake annoying his stomach. If the vomiting continues I would attend the vet in case the fat level in the pancake has caused pancreatitis. However, it should settle within the next 24 hours. Keep him on bland food with unlimited water.

Have Madu examined by your veterinarian. Blood work may diagnose anemia or a mineral deficiency. Other causes include simple boredom, inadequate nutrition or he likes the taste. Review his diet with your vet, provide more exercise and playtime during the day with him and provide toys as distractions.

If Jack is normal weight he is eating enough and is regulating his food intake to exercise expenditure. Especially in the hot summer many dogs are less active and don't want to eat much. If he's thin then I would try a food made for sensitive stomachs or a bland one of chicken and rice. I don't like to switch around too much as the constant change can irritate their stomach and make some dogs fussy eaters. An upset stomach is a common problem with puppies and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It may not be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Jack has any of the following, then he should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can try feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1/4 cup or less) three times a day. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. Food allergies can be very frustrating to diagnose since there are multiple ingredients that can cause a reaction. Consider an exam with your veterinarian. Discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets, food elimination trials and antihistamine use during the visit. A food trial should last at least 6 weeks during which only the new diet should be fed. No treats, no table food, no other foods. Choose a food with a protein and carbohydrate source that Lucy has NEVER eaten before. This can be tricky but there are several prescription and OTC choices.

I'm glad to hear that Lucy otherwise seems to be eating, drinking and acting normally! However, it is very concerning that she has had vomiting with dark material that may or may not be blood. If blood is present, it is possible that she could have an ulcer in her stomach and/or intestines, severe intestinal parasites, exposure to a toxin, cancer, among many other issues. Even though this has only happened twice over 2 months, I still strongly recommend taking Lucy to her vet for evaluation. She may need to have abdominal x-rays and/or ultrasound, as well as some blood testing. From there, her vet will be able to advise you as to the best course of treatment.
