My dog won't drink water. How often can I give him Pedialyte?

Poor guy. Yes you sure can give him Pedialyte but only the non-flavored kind diluted 50:50 with water. You can use a syringe or small turkey baster to given it to him if he doesn't take it readily. You can give him as much as he will take readily (probably around 20cc's) and offer it every 4 hrs or so. Poor guy I hope Oliver feels better soon. Take care.

Hello. If Belle feels like drinking, then yes, she can have Pedialyte to drink. You can also try to get her to eat using some cooked chicken or hamburger, or even jars of baby food ( with no onions or garlic in the ingredients ). If she still refuses to eat or drink, I do hope you can have her examined by your veterinarian. She may have some infection or inflammation that is making her feel ill. You can offer the pedialyte in a bowl several times a day. If he is refusing to drink from the bowl then you can syringe 10-20mls every 2 hours or so into his mouth. Be sure to do it slowly so there is no risk of aspiration. You can offer him water at the same time as well. If he is significantly dehydrated however you will need to have fluids administered by your vet, either via IV or subcutaneously. I hope this helps. Ten ounces of water per every 10 pounds of body weight per day is about average. So at 14 pounds she would need about 14 ounces of water per day to stay hydrated. This should be broken up into very small amounts throughout the day. If you are giving Pedialyte you should dilute it 1/2 and 1/2 with water. Pedialyte is not balanced electrolytes for dogs and it is has a lot of synthetic sweeteners in it which are not good. Plain water is fine to give.

You may try offering a small amount (1/8 of a cup) several times daily. Vomiting can be rapidly dehydrating in young small puppies, so it can be hard to correct dehydration alone with oral liquids. You can give diluted pedialyte or I would recommend giving a veterinary product such as NaturVet Pet Electrolytes Concentrate Dog & Cat Liquid Supplement, 16-oz bottle. This can be found at your local Petco or online. I would hold off on giving any electrolytes though as what you are describing does not sound like dehydration is the problem. I don’t recommend to give any flavored Pedialyte as it can cause further stomach upset and some of them may contain a toxic sweetener called xylitol. When pets have diarrhea beyond two days, they need to be examined by the veterinarian as shifts in the bacterial flora tend to occur and will continue the diarrhea regardless of the initial cause. Continuing diarrhea can be a sign of many different disease conditions. Bring in a sample of stool for testing. I hope this helps.
