Is mycoplasma contagious? Will my healthy dog get it from my rescue?

Most upper respiratory infections from the shelter are viral, but young newly adopted dogs are at greater risk for secondary bacterial infections Which is why they often get put on antibiotics. However, many otherwise healthy adult dogs will recover quickly without any antibiotics. I Ted to treat it like you would a cold in yourself. Fluids, Rest, and a little time as long as appetite is normal and acting fine otherwise . Based on the history, I am suspicious of an infectious cause and that Micah has given it to the other animals. Its extremely unusual for cats to get infections from dogs but its not impossible. There are many different organisms (bacteria and viruses) that cause respiratory infections and its possible that the antibiotic was ineffective for this particular infection or that it is a virus that needs to run its course. I would recommend another trip to the vet to have her checked out again to be on the safe side. Make sure Micah is drinking plenty of water and she is getting rest as this is good for her immune system. A fatty acid supplement will also help decrease inflammation in her nose and this may help relieve some symptoms as well.

Poor doggy. No mycoplasma is not contagious to other pets or people. Mycoplasma is transmitted through a flea bite and pets can be affected. This is not considered to be a zoonotic (contagious to people) disease although there was 1 reported case of a person getting infected after being scratched by a cat. But in general no it isn't easily transmissible to people. So essentially a flea that is infected will infect any other pets that are not protected by a monthly flea preventative. I would keep them separate for now and wash your hands after handling each dog. She needs to rest as stress may make her worse. I’m not sure what type of sickness she has but contact them tomorrow and they should be able to get medication for you to give her at home. She will heal more quickly at your house than in a shelter environment. If your dog is healthy and vaccinated it should be able to fight off any infection the new dog may have. Coso is probably recovering from an upper respiratory infection or cold, or kennel cough. This may take another week or two to fully resolve. As long as he's eating and acting normal it's nothing to be overly concerned about. Should he stop eating, be lethargic or the sneezing doesn't clear up in a week or so then a veterinary exam is in order. Puppies often get sick when together especially in a shelter or rescue situation and heal quickly once in a home with better care and nutrition. Hello, my name is Dr. Elizabeth and I am happy to help. I hate to hear D was sick but it sounds like he is improving, which is great. And congrats on the new puppy, how exciting! I think your concern is warranted as you don't want the new puppy to get sick. In general, pets are considered not contagious if they haven't been coughing for a week. Or once they start antibiotics, generally they will not be contagious (assuming they respond well as expected) within a week into therapy. These are generalized assumptions but keep in mind, every pet is different. Personally, I would want the antibiotic on board for 10 days AND no coughing for 10 days before I would bring home a puppy. I would also clean the house really well including washing all dogs beds/blankets, vacuuming and mopping to decrease bacteria and viruses in the environment. If possible, have the breeder go ahead and give the Bordetella vaccine (ideally a week or longer ) before the new puppy is due to arrive at your house. Poor Walter. Unfortunately, there are several things that can cause an elevated WBC. An upper respiratory infection or pneumonia certainly cause this, but so can any type of infection else where. I would first want to have his WBC rechecked to see if there has been any improvement since starting the meds. I would also talk to your vet to see if they ran a chemistry to look at him liver and kidney values. Just make sure you let your vet know that he isn't what you would consider normal. If everything is looking better, his change in behavior may just be part of him adjusting to the new living area and being away from the previous living arrangements. Any change in a dog's life can cause them to stress and become anxious and/or lethargic. I hope this helps and he starts to warm up to his new forever home.
