My dog has strep. Is he contagious to a new puppy on Amoxicillin?

My 6 year old Lab has strep and our local vet gave our dog Amoxicillin our dog is on Amoxicillin 6 days now and done in week no cough for 2 weeks. We are supposed to get a puppy in few days and are worried of our dog giving the puppy strep? How long is our dog contagious on Amoxicillin and will puppy catch strep?

I hate to hear D was sick but it sounds like he is improving, which is great. And congrats on the new puppy, how exciting! I think your concern is warranted as you don't want the new puppy to get sick.

In general, pets are considered not contagious if they haven't been coughing for a week. Or once they start antibiotics, generally they will not be contagious (assuming they respond well as expected) within a week into therapy.

These are generalized assumptions but keep in mind, every pet is different. Personally, I would want the antibiotic on board for 10 days AND no coughing for 10 days before I would bring home a puppy. I would also clean the house really well including washing all dogs beds/blankets, vacuuming and mopping to decrease bacteria and viruses in the environment. If possible, have the breeder go ahead and give the Bordetella vaccine (ideally a week or longer ) before the new puppy is due to arrive at your house.

Not commonly no. There is only one strain of strep that is contagious to dogs and it has only been recorded to happen on rare occurrences. Therefore I wouldn't be as concerned about transfer to your pet. Now with that in mind, I wouldn't go allowing your pet to lick all over your face and eat your used tissues in the wastebasket either. Should I take my puppy to vet? Kennel cough returned after prednisone.

It's possible that the inflammation in the airways just has not completely resolved, and the pred was helping to decrease that inflammation. If he's still eating and drinking, and he's active and happy, I wouldn't be too concerned yet. Give it another 5 days or so, if the cough is still persisting, followup with your vet. If his breathing is labored at all, or if he seems depressed or has a decreased appetite, please followup with your vet. As for being contagious, he may still be. I would wait at least another week before having him around other dogs. Is a new puppy's URI contagious to my older dog with heartworms?

In general upper respiratory infections are contagious and it would probably be best to keep them separated until the puppy is no longer contagious. You may want to keep them separated longer since your dog will need to be exercise restricted after the heartworm treatment injections for 6 weeks. If the puppy has been receiving treatment through a veterinarian you should be able to obtain records and this could help determine how long the puppy might be contagious.

Is mycoplasma contagious? Will my healthy dog get it from my rescue?

Good question! What I tend to see in practice is that these rescue dogs are very stressed from previous poor nutrition, being in a shelter, and then usually surgery. Their immune system is weak and they get any infection they are exposed to. The existing family dogs are usually well fed and healthy. Some do get these infections, but many are able to fight them off and either never get sick or only have very mild signs. Of course I would be vigilant about monitoring for any signs but I would also be optimistic that he could remain healthy! Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Is a puppy with staph infection safe to bring home with young kids?

Staph infections on dogs skin are a different type of bacteria compared the staph we get. It is possible to be contagious but very rare and mostly in immunocompromised such as though going through chemo. I think you are safe to still go get the puppy as it will be fixed within a week

Most dogs with staph infections are not considered contagious unless they are infected with MRSA or have a staph infection due to an infectious condition (like ringworm). I recommend to call your veterinarian and clarify is Rotor at risk for a contagious form. I hope this helps.
