My new dog is snorting and coughing, now my other pets are sick.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Beast. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian as the respiratory tract infection does not seem to be resolving. It seems as though it has now been spread to your other dog as well. I would ask about the possibility of using a different antibiotic as doxycycline can damage the teeth in young puppies. In the meantime, keep him quiet to allow his body to rest. Encourage him to eat and drink as normally as possible. Good luck!

It sounds like they had a touch of kennel cough which is like dog flu. What can happen when treating with antibiotics that if the course finishes too soon it can make them better but hasn't completely killed the bugs then it recurs. I would visit your vet as you may need a longer course or different antibiotic.

It is hard to say exactly what this could be without examining Filmore and the other cat first, but I can offer a few possibilities. One possibility may be an upper respiratory tract infection caused by a virus called the Feline Herpes virus which cats can acquire early in life. The virus stays dormant for a while until a stressful event or the cat's immune system becomes compromised in some way allowing the virus to replicate and cause upper respiratory symptoms. Another possibility may be a heart condition which can cause fluid to build up in the lungs which can cause coughing or wheezing. A final possibility may be feline asthma which can be triggered by an allergen. If the cats where allergic the dog fur or dander, this could be plausible. Most upper respiratory infections from the shelter are viral, but young newly adopted dogs are at greater risk for secondary bacterial infections Which is why they often get put on antibiotics. However, many otherwise healthy adult dogs will recover quickly without any antibiotics. I Ted to treat it like you would a cold in yourself. Fluids, Rest, and a little time as long as appetite is normal and acting fine otherwise . That is definitely suspicious, because they can share certain upper respiratory diseases. If the vet did not find a foreign body, then hopefully they would be treating for infection. This would be good information to pass along to your mother's vet. Also, Ginger should see the vet. The infections that are passed from dogs to cats are bacterial, so this will require antibiotics to clear the infection. I hope that helps and Ginger gets better soon.

Poor Miko! It sounds like she probably has an upper respiratory infection of some kind - this is very common in dogs who have come from a shelter or rescue environment with lots of other dogs. I would recommend taking her to the vet to have this checked, since she will probably need a course of antibiotics to treat the infection.

Hello, and thanks for your question about Nautica. Upper respiratory viruses are very common infections in cats, and if both cats are sneezing then that would be my first thought. However, in some cases upper respiratory infections can lead to secondary bacterial infections or pneumonia, and sometimes they do need medication to get back on track. Additionally, there are some other less common causes of coughing/sneezing such as parasites. The rash in the photo looks pretty mild - I wonder if Nautica was rubbing or scratching at his face and caused a little trauma or irritation to the skin. Often respiratory infections cause some irritation of the eyes and face, which may have made him rub/scratch there. Since you mentioned that he's not quite acting like himself, I would recommend bringing them in to the vet. Your vet will do an exam, and if they are concerned that this is something more serious than a mild respiratory virus they will discuss any medications that might benefit your cats, or if any follow up diagnostics are necessary, such as a fecal exam (to look for parasites that can cause respiratory symptoms), or x-rays of the chest.
