My adopted puppy is coughing and sneezing. Is it normal or serious?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 28 lbs

I adopted my puppy last Wednesday and for the first couple days ge seemed to make a sound that seemed like he was trying to cough something up. He doesn't do it too often anynore but he does tend to sneeze a lot. Especially in the mornings when I go to take him outside. He mostly sneezed when we leave the apartment to go outside for walks but also sneezes occasionally inside. Should I be concerned or is this normal?

Coso is probably recovering from an upper respiratory infection or cold, or kennel cough. This may take another week or two to fully resolve. As long as he's eating and acting normal it's nothing to be overly concerned about. Should he stop eating, be lethargic or the sneezing doesn't clear up in a week or so then a veterinary exam is in order. Puppies often get sick when together especially in a shelter or rescue situation and heal quickly once in a home with better care and nutrition. I would recommend you have Khali evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for this possibility and treat accordingly. My newly adopted dog sneezes and sleeps a lot. Is this normal?

He could have some allergies or possibly have an upper respiratory infection. You can monitor him for a few days and see if the sneezing resolves. If it continues, he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. He may need an anti-histamine or antibiotic to treat. As for the sleeping, it may take him some time to adjust to his new home. As long as he seems energetic when you take him out than it is probably nothing to worry about. You could have him examined by a vet if it continues. New adopted puppy has green snot and sneezes. Should I see a vet?

It's not uncommon that these shelter pups end up with an upper respiratory infection and it looks like Raven and Scarlette got it. These are usually mild diseases, but can be controlled with medication. I would call the shelter soon and ask if you can schedule with their vet. Often, the adoption agreements allow for a two-week time period where you can bring the dog back for veterinary treatment. I hope that helps and good on you for adopting rather than buying.

Why does my adopted puppy sneeze and have a snotty, runny nose?

Poor Miko! It sounds like she probably has an upper respiratory infection of some kind - this is very common in dogs who have come from a shelter or rescue environment with lots of other dogs. I would recommend taking her to the vet to have this checked, since she will probably need a course of antibiotics to treat the infection.

Very common in cats that come from a shelter setting even if they are vaccinated. I suggest you take him to a vet and do not go by what the shelter lady is telling you. He most likely does need antibiotics. Coughing is not really normal even if they have an upper respiratory infection so that is a bit concerning and it's best to have him checked out. Why is my recently adopted kitten sneezing but still playful?

Sneezing is common in cats and can be a sign of mild allergies. I wouldn't be too terribly concerned, unless you start seeing nasal discharge, decreased appetite, or wheezing. Let it run its course and if things don't improve or seem to worsen after about 3-4 days, then you should get Dale seen by your vet for some allergy medication and other treatments (i.e. antibiotics) if needed. Why does my newly adopted dog have a yellow runny nose and congestion?

This can happen. It can take up to two weeks for an upper respiratory infection to form when adopting a dog. I would recommend bringing Jordy to a vet and have him checked out. You would want to make sure his lungs sound clear and he does not have pneumonia or bronchitis. Your veterinarian can prescribe antibiotics if needed.
