My adopted puppy is coughing and sneezing. Is it normal or serious?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 28 lbs

I adopted my puppy last Wednesday and for the first couple days ge seemed to make a sound that seemed like he was trying to cough something up. He doesn't do it too often anynore but he does tend to sneeze a lot. Especially in the mornings when I go to take him outside. He mostly sneezed when we leave the apartment to go outside for walks but also sneezes occasionally inside. Should I be concerned or is this normal?

Coso is probably recovering from an upper respiratory infection or cold, or kennel cough. This may take another week or two to fully resolve. As long as he's eating and acting normal it's nothing to be overly concerned about. Should he stop eating, be lethargic or the sneezing doesn't clear up in a week or so then a veterinary exam is in order. Puppies often get sick when together especially in a shelter or rescue situation and heal quickly once in a home with better care and nutrition. Please continue the vaccination and deworming program that was recommended. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Coso.
