My dog has a patch of missing hair. Is it a snake bite or wound?

That small round spot is suspicious for something called demodex mite. It is diagnosed with a skin scrape and found under the microscope. It often shows up on young dogs or after a stressful event (surely the snake bite would count). Most of the time the immune system kicks in and gets rid of the lesion, but occasionally it gets bigger or there are more spots showing up. Those cases usually need treatment. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These could potentially represent nodules or masses that have become ulcerated. They could also be just focal patches of dermatitis. I recommend that you have Bella evaluated by your veterinarian. This is most of the time differentiated with a test called a fine needle aspirate which is easy, cheap and pain-free. Sometimes, a biopsy is required for a diagnosis. Have Bella evaluated by your veterinarian to have this test performed to try to sort out what the diagnosis is so that the best course of action can be determined. If it does not appear to be a mass on examination, they can at least do cytology of the superficial aspect and see if infected and prescribe antibiotics for it. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is something benign!

An examination would be really helpful in determining what is the most likely cause. Since it has already started improving, I would recommend you continue monitoring this. Hello. Yes, I would advise having your snake seen before the area becomes significantly infected. We have many treatments to treat wounds in snakes, many of which you may need to continue at home. It could be, and that looks bad. Lady has to see a vet immediately. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

While I do not see evidence of a bite in that picture, that is still possible and an examination would be needed to determine that for sure. Because it is small and mild, I think it would be ok to treat at home. You may apply a thin film of triple antibiotic ointment on the affected area twice daily for 5 days. If this does not improve or resolves, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. There is a very good chance that this will improve quickly. However, if you notice any signs of worsening, like severe swelling, have her evaluated. Good luck and have a great day!

I would recommend you check in with your veterinarian as they know exactly where they put the vaccine and how expected or not expected this is. They may for example recommend anti-inflammatory medications or possibly sampling that lesion to make sure it is not something else such as an infection or growth that needs to be treated.
