My dog has a wound that looks like a bite. Can I treat it at home?

An examination would be really helpful in determining what is the most likely cause. Since it has already started improving, I would recommend you continue monitoring this. Hi there. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is definitely a scab but from what, I don't know. This could be from trauma, an insect bite (like a tick) or the start of a skin infection. Unfortunately there is no way to tell for sure. I wouldn't be overly worried at this stage. Personally, if Buffy were my dog, I would just leave it alone and monitor it. But, if you want to do something at home, you can apply a thin layer of an antibiotic ointment over it twice a day. If it doesn't heal or it looks worse at any stage then get him to your vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

However, it would still be a good idea to have him evaluated by a veterinarian to look at it more closely in case it is deeper than what it looks like. Also, these can be painful and can get infected so your veterinarian could potentially start antibiotics and pain control medications. If superficial, these wounds tend to respond well to therapy and heal relatively quickly. Good luck and have a good night!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A small skin abrasion or hot spot like you are describing may require topical antibiotics to heal. If it does not resolve or worsens, I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian. In the meantime, I would keep it clean and if you have grooming clippers try to carefully shave the fur in that area to allow it to heal (do not use scissors!). Good luck!

Hello. This does not look too bad. I do not think Shasta needs oral antibiotics, but it may benefit from a topical antibiotic. I would show this to your vet & see how concerned she might be. Otherwise, hot compresses & keeping Shasta from doing any licking on the area ( using either an Elizabethan collar, T-shirt, or canine body suit ) should be all that is necessary. She definitely could have gotten a bug bite in that area that caused her to itch/bite at that area, creating a scab. If it is the only small area, I'd say a single bug bite is more likely than something like allergies, which tend to affect a diffuse part of the body. As long as she is acting normally at home (not continuously itching, and she is eating/drinking normally), I recommend monitoring her at home. You can check that site daily to see if it is getting smaller and less red. If you notice that it is getting bigger, or you notice the development of more similar spots, or she is licking/biting at it, I recommend having her seen by your veterinarian. If there is really an abscess, this should not be treated at home. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment.
