My dog has two wounds. What are they and should I see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 65 lbs

I noticed these two wounds a few days ago. The first pic is from day 1. The other two are from yesterday. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These could potentially represent nodules or masses that have become ulcerated. They could also be just focal patches of dermatitis. I recommend that you have Bella evaluated by your veterinarian. This is most of the time differentiated with a test called a fine needle aspirate which is easy, cheap and pain-free. Sometimes, a biopsy is required for a diagnosis. Have Bella evaluated by your veterinarian to have this test performed to try to sort out what the diagnosis is so that the best course of action can be determined. If it does not appear to be a mass on examination, they can at least do cytology of the superficial aspect and see if infected and prescribe antibiotics for it. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is something benign!

This cannot be completely assessed just by looking at pictures or a description and usually requires sampling such as fine needle aspiration to determine its origin. My dog has an odd, changing, itchy hair patch. What should I do?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear that Belle is having this problem. By the pictures, it appears that there is evidence of some skin growths or masses. Since you mention changes and that she is scratching at it, these indicate that you should have your veterinarian evaluate her. Your vet can do a physical exam of the area and then advise a few treatment options. Most likely they will advise excision or removal of the affected area and then send the sample off to a pathologist so they can diagnose what the mass is. By far, most skin growths are benign but some are cancerous or malignant so it is important to determine what the growth is. Again, have your vet evaluate her and I hope all is well and works out for you and her.

Why does my dog have scabs, dry skin, and hair loss on her back?

I would be concerned that this could be some form of immune mediated disease or a reaction to something in the environment or medication or perhaps an infection of some sort. I recommend that you have Bella evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. What should I do if my dog has a wound? When should I see a vet?

However, it would still be a good idea to have him evaluated by a veterinarian to look at it more closely in case it is deeper than what it looks like. Also, these can be painful and can get infected so your veterinarian could potentially start antibiotics and pain control medications. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. This is severe and no home remedies are expected to improve this.
