What if my dog missed a Keppra dose? Can I give more for seizures?

Hello. We do use Keppra in dogs, & this would have been a bit on the lower dosing side, so I would not be concerned. A potential dangerous dose would need to be at least 10 times this much. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. 30mg of phenobarbitone twice a day is not a very high dose for Gum Gum's weight therefore you can give her another tablet now. It will not cause any problems even if it was a double dose for this evening. You should continue with other medications as normal.

Keppra does have a wide margin of safety, but keep a close eye on Hoyt. If you see any concerning signs like vomiting, lethargy, or diarrhea, have him seen by a vet. Give his next dose at the normal time.

Luckily Keppra has a large safety index, meaning that 20x the therapeutic level (1,200mg/kg) can be given and only cause mild symptoms (salivation and vomiting). Your pet should be ok after receiving 1500 mg at once b/c this is a dosage of 36mg/kg). No need to induce vomiting or visit your ER vet. You can return to his normal 2 pills at his next schedule dosage. I would also recommend just informing your vet for proper record keeping. Hello. Phenobarbital can be absorbed very quickly, so it possible that some has already entered the bloodstream. If Luna's seizures have been well controlled up to this point, then missing one dose will not be harmful. Just redose at her next normal scheduled time.
