Could my old dog's methionine medication have caused his passing?

The presence of fluid in the abdomen may have indicated severe liver disease which may have proved terminal. The slow recovery from anesthesia may have been due in part to the liver not functioning properly enough to clear anesthetic agents from the body.

I'm very sorry for your loss. With the lab changes you described, sepsis and cancer certainly were possibilities. A UTI would have to be quite severe to cause sepsis. If you were accustomed to monitoring for signs of a UTI, I highly doubt that you would miss one severe enough to cause sepsis. Hello, I am so sorry for your loss. Please, either way don’t beat yourself up about what could or couldn’t have happened. Just learn from this and contact a vet just in case, anytime something is given/eaten that shouldn’t be. Even if all you get is piece of mind, you won’t have to wonder. I can not find that specific name in a formulary but if it was doxycycline, that should not have caused an issue. If it was doxydyl (deracoxib), that would have been a very high dose and could have caused some life threatening issues. Even then, it may have been unrelated to medication or even the treated infection so it is important not to blame yourselves for the unknown.

It is not likely that there is a connection between her medications for the chronic kidney failure and the synovial sarcoma. Synovial sarcomas are very aggressive soft tissue tumors that tend to metastasize as well. I'm very sorry your friends lost their dog so suddenly! Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain what caused him to pass away, but the symptoms you describe sound like he was extremely ill. He could have had a systemic illness not related to his hyperthyroidism that caused him to pass away.
