My cat has severe DL-methionine side effects. What should I do?

These signs could be consistent with methimazole related side effects. GI upset and facial itching are some of the most common acute side effects in the first few months of therapy. I would recommend stopping the medication until you can talk to your vet about your concerns. Some cats can not take this medication and thus require an alternate method of treatment. I researched the product before I answered you and I did not see any harmful ingredients. However, that does not mean no animal will never show any adverse effects. If it does not agree with your cat stop using it. No one can guarantee anything. I have been a veterinarian in the US for close to 20 years and as a certified veterinary technician for 5 years prior to that. I have never heard of this product but that does not mean there is anything wrong with it. There are millions of products in the world marketed towards animals with new ones coming out each day. There is no way to keep up with all of them. Again, I suggest you contact the manufacturer directly for any concerns.

I am sorry to hear about Midnite. I would call and let your vet know of the symptoms. You don't mention if he just started this medication or if he has been on it long term. Some cats can experience lethargy and GI upset when first starting the medication and in some cases we need to start at a lower dose and taper it up, but you need to consult with your vet in order to know if this is the right course of action for your kitty. If he has been on methimazole for a long time and just started with the lethargy/decreased appetite, then an exam and possibly bloodwork are in order for him to ensure there isn't another cause for his symptoms.

I'm so sorry to hear that you had to put your dog down. I know that is never an easy decision. I doubt the methionine has anything to do with his passing but of course, there is no way for me to know this for sure. Anything is possible. I do not have enough information though to be helpful. You did not say why you had to put your dog down, what symptoms he was having, etc. Personally, I think if the methionine was to cause an issue it would have happened sooner than 7 months after him taking it unless he had a pre-existing liver, kidney or pancreatic disease. Hello. With one acute overdose of Lysine & DMG, you are most likely going to deal with the GI signs for a bit, & this will be mostly vomiting & diarrhea. The half life of Lysine is pretty quick, so it should be out of their bodies in a day or so. If the vomiting persists, you may need to take them in to your vet for anti-nausea medication & perhaps some fluids, so just monitor how they act over the next few hours. If they settle down, then they will be fine. If the vomiting remains persistent, then you should seek veterinary care. This is not the first time I have seen this with cats. Kudos to you for your consideration and compassion for your pet. In terms of hyperthyroidism in cats, there are only three real treatments on the market today. These are methimazole treatment, thyroidectomy surgery, and radioactive iodine treatment. It is believed in the veterinary community that radioactive iodine is the gold standard treatment today. With the information you have provided, I can offer you a few possibilities for future treatment: 1. Perhaps you can get the math him is all in a tablet form to crush it into a fine powder and then mix it with any palatable substance that she likes and then squirt it in her mouth with a syringe. This, however, may cause some behavior problems because she may not like this either. 2. If you are willing to accept the costs and all of the different parts that go with the radioactive iodine treatment, I say go for it because the success rate for that specific treatment is excellent. If the medication had caused the vomiting, I would have expected it to cause vomiting days ago when you started it. That leads me to believe it is less likely related to the medication and more likely related to something else. That being said, double check that you are giving the correct amount and do shake the bottle well each time you give it. Just like in people, there are dozens of reasons vomiting occurs including: infection, dietary indiscretion (eating that piece of plant or human food, or dead mouse), GI foreign body (eating that hair band which is now causing problems), toxin, non specific nausea, diet change or new treat, and the list goes on. If it was just the three times in a row, I would just withhold food and water for 2 hours, then reinteoduce water. If she holds that down well, offer a small bit of food 8-12 hours after the last episode of vomiting. Don’t repeat tonight’s dose of medication. I am concerned in the back of my mind that something else is going on since her appetite had started decreasing. Is it related to the disease we are treating with the doxycycline or some other problem? Certainly if the vomiting continues or she is not ready to eat in the next 24 hours, or you see any new signs, please head to your vet or an emergency vet for re-valuation.
