Can Metrobactin cause fluid buildup and death in dogs with liver issues?

I'm so sorry to hear that you had to put your dog down. I know that is never an easy decision. I doubt the methionine has anything to do with his passing but of course, there is no way for me to know this for sure. Anything is possible. I do not have enough information though to be helpful. You did not say why you had to put your dog down, what symptoms he was having, etc. Personally, I think if the methionine was to cause an issue it would have happened sooner than 7 months after him taking it unless he had a pre-existing liver, kidney or pancreatic disease. Thnk you for submitting your question regarding Mugsy. I am so sudden for his sudden loss. That is difficult to bear any time, but especially with a dog so young. An impacted anal glad could not result in the symptoms you have described. So I do not believe his scooting was part of the disease process. It is difficult to tell from the x-ray, but I worry there is fluid in his abdomen as there is poor detail. It is difficult to make out specific internal organs. Fluid can be from an infection, bleeding or significant GI, liver, heart or kidney disease. Regardless of the cause, he was very sick and the outcome likely would not have been different with anything you could have done. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

It is all dependent on the cause of the liver failure. Is the liver failure due to a primary tumor or other cause? Prognosis varies from pet to pet. Whether it is cirrhosis of the liver or a tumor causing the problem, the prognosis can be days to years depending on how severe it is. What I would recommend is further testing to help determine if there is a primary cause. You can drain his abdomen periodically to make him comfortable. If there is a liver mass, some liver tumors can be removed surgically by removing the affected liver lobe. Not that long ago, I removed a large tumor on a friend's dog that was causing fluid in the abdomen and also the mass / cyst contained approximately 750ml of fluid! The dog is doing great and the prognosis is very good as the tumor was benign. Some outcomes are favorable and others are unfavorable. It would be best to seek further testing to help get a better grasp on what the prognosis will be for his dog. I hope this helps! Addison's is a very strange and difficult disease to fully comprehend in terms of its cause and effects on the body. I dont know exactly what your dog is being treated with, but the mainstay of treatment is replacement of steroids, both mineralcorticoid and glucocortocoid. Certainly with steroids there can be negative effects on the body such as weight gain, polyuria and sometimes med induced cushing's disease. However, steroid level is usually we regulated and momitored at check ups. I dont think that the levels of medication used could lead to such a sudden onset of organ failure. The bad effects of steroids are usually gradual and cause the cushings disease as opposed to organ failure. If Sadie is in orhan failure it is unlikely due to her meds. Cushing's can cause massive elevations in liver enzymes and a pot belly but not so much fluid build up. The other thing to consider is that she may have had an issue from birth effecting her in more ways than just an adrenal problem. And finally, without the medication for addison's it is unlikely that she would have made it to the age she has. Many dogs go into addisonian crises and die. It is unfortunate and sad that this is happening to Sadie, but you have done all you can for her, and likely given her much more life than she would have had otherwise.

No, doxycycline can commonly cause vomiting and diarrhea with no appetite, but unless there was an acute allergic reaction it does not cause death. If the MRSA spread to the blood stream and she became septic, then this can be fatal as the infection took over her body. I am sorry for your loss.

It is difficult to say if the elevated creatinine is due to the medications or not since you don't have a "before" creatinine. Meropenem is not known to cause renal side effects unless the dog already had a renal condition to start with. The known side effects of meropenem may include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, phlebitis, eosinophilia, transient elevation of liver function tests and seizures (esp. in patients with CNS dysfunction and renal failure). I don't have enough information to know if he can be cured. You didn't say what his original problem was. Why was he given all those antibiotics? What was the illness?

Fluid accumulation in the abdomen is often secondary to heart disease (valvular disease, heart worms, cardiomyopathy) ..or...some type of malignancy. Tumors in the abdominal cavity can sometimes be associated with fluid build up. It is important to do some additional diagnostic tests. Survey radiographs to start, then it may be advised to move on to an ultrasound....either of the heart or if the abdomen depending on radiograph findings. The ultrasound can be particularly helpful in cases like this where fluid accumulation reduces the ability to see vital structures on radiographs. This most likely had nothing to do with a case of overeating. There is likely some disease process that has been going on for some time. I hope you can get some answers soon.
