Was my dog's death caused by mixing Clavamox and Doxycycline?

No, doxycycline can commonly cause vomiting and diarrhea with no appetite, but unless there was an acute allergic reaction it does not cause death. If the MRSA spread to the blood stream and she became septic, then this can be fatal as the infection took over her body. I am sorry for your loss.

Hello, I am very sorry to hear about your dog Brewki's passing. Unfortunately, I do not have enough information to give you a good answer. I would have to know what type of white blood cells were elevated and how low the red blood cell count was to be of much help. Without all of the medical records it is extremely hard to give council. If you would like, you can chose to do a private consult with one of our vets. That way you can chat back and forth and if you have copies of the bloodwork you can upload those results. I agree with the previous veterinarian though, the Clavamox and Doxycycline administration together likely had nothing to do with his passing. Those two antibiotics are often given concurrently without incidence. When an animal passes away unexpectedly, the only real chance you have to know what may have caused the death is to have a necropsy (autopsy) done on the body but even with that, often times we don't get a definitive answer. I am not quite sure why you are wondering about doxycycline though. As you know, it is an antibiotic and is not indicated in treating lymphoma. Prednisone is the only treatment if chemotherapy cannot be instituted. Prednisone is not a curative medication, it only works to slow the growth of the cancer. Doxycycline does not do anything to treat cancer. If you can provide more information as to why you are referring to the doxycycline we can maybe help you better. Again, I am sorry for your loss. Amoxicillin and Clavamox are very similar antibiotics so they are typically prescribed at the same time. They each can cause nausea and vomiting. So that may be the cause of the vomiting he is experiencing. He may not be eating due to gastrointestinal upset or being in pain. If possible, I would contact his veterinarian to see if his medications need to adjusted and if more pain medicine can be added. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as they can be toxic to dogs. Offer small frequent meals such as warmed canned food or water mixed into his dry kibble. This can make it more appealing. I hope this information helps!

I'm so sorry for your loss! It it's so hard when you lose a pet that young. It's hard to know for sure what happened with Duck but with very low white cell counts I would be concerned about infection in his bone marrow such as a tickborne disease or even potentially cancer. The only way to truly know what caused his passing would be a post more exam similar to an autopsy of people. However from my experience many times we still don't get an exact answer. Please know from what I can tell this is not anything you did or did not do or any indication of anything lacking on your part.

I am sorry to hear of your loss of Tilly. I'm sure this has been hard on you. In my opinion, it sounds as though there was some systemic disease process going on that lead to her untimely passing. I do not think the steroids had anything to do with this. It is possible she had a viral infection as well or something she ate that lead to her passing. Hello. I am very sorry for your loss. I do not think any of the medications by themselves, or in combination contributed to Kassie's death. None of the medications were given long enough to cause any kind of toxicity level, & all were appropriate for trying to help her. Please accept my condolences for your loss.
