Could ibuprofen be the cause of an elderly dog's sudden passing?

Ibuprofen intoxication can cause stomach upset, ulceration in the stomach and, if ingested in larger amounts, problems with kidneys. Typically, the symptoms occur within 24-48hrs from ibuprofen ingestion, so if you dog ate the pill 5 days ago, most likely everything is fine. As long as she is not having any gastrointestinal signs at present (no vomiting, no blood in stools, good appetite) and she is passing urine as normal, most likely there is nothing to worry about.

Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. Ibuprofen should not be given to dogs as even in small amounts it can be toxic. I recommend that you have Baby girl evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. While this would be within the therapeutic index and it is supposed to be safe, this medication is not commonly used for pain control in dogs as it is not well-studied. Also, I would avoid using medications without a veterinary prescription. For now, she will likely be fine. Have a good Sunday!

The low end of the toxic dose range is 50mg/kg, which is about 1500mg. He should be fine but if you begin to notice signs of vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or inappetance then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Hello. Ingesting ibuprofen over 25 mg/kg can cause significant gastrointestinal signs. Sable ingested the equivalent of 33mg/kg, so she could have some issues. See hoe she is in the morning, & try to have her seen. She may just be placed on a stomach protectant for a few days just to make sure she stays well. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Torres! What an ordeal! With out knowing what medication he was given by your Vet I am not sure how to guide you. But when dogs spend the night at the hospital they rarely sleep well. Some dogs are very stressed and stand, bark and cry the ENTIRE time. I always tell owners, especially with older dogs, that when they go home they likely will be exhausted and sleep soundly for 12-24 hours. That in combinations with a medication that causes drowsiness is likely what is hitting Torres so hard. Also when older dogs are on IV fluids they produce more urine and that may cause dripping if he is so exhausted. My recommendation is to see how 12 hours+ at home play out. If he is still excessively tired and won't eat or drink then I would call your Vet to discuss and consider a recheck. I hope this helps and I wish Torres a speedy recovery!

Hello. You do not say what strength the ibuprofen was, but a 50 pound dog can take about 225 mg every 12-24 hours. Toxicity may be seen if your dog ingested around 568 mg.
