My dog has green eye discharge after grooming. What should I do?

If you are seeing green eye discharge in Chacha's eyes, this could indicate there is a problem such as dry eye, which should be diagnosed / treated by a veterinarian. There is specific treatment for dry eye that you will not find over the counter (Optimmune ointment or Tacrolimus ointment) which helps stimulate tear production. The over the counter products simply lubricate the eyes and do not last long enough. You can try an over the counter dry eye medication for dogs such as OPTIXCARE, which you can find online. The sooner you have this looked at the better as dry eye can lead to eye trauma from the lack of lubrication from the tears.

I recommend you use an E-collar so he doesn't rub the eye and cause a scratch on the surface of the eye. Do not put anything in the eye until you see your Vet. Ointments or drops for the eye are made specifically to be safe for use in the eye. Ointments for the skin are not safe to be put in the eye. I wish you the best and Nico a speedy recovery!

At least in these pictures, his cornea appears affected. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor guy! if the discharge didn't resolve with an ocular antibiotic it likely isn't a bacterial conjunctivitis. I would recommend having your Vet test for dry eye and then treat for allergies. Since he is rubbing his chin he could have allergies to his environment. He may need an eye ointment with steroids in it and be put on a systemic antihistamine. Below is a link to one you can try. I would also recommend preventing your other dog from licking the eye as he could be contributing to an infection. The foul breath could be dental disease or from the type of food you feed. The main reason is that greenish discharge can also be observed with things like a corneal ulcer or conjunctivitis for example. Your veterinarian could check for this and treat accordingly. Eye discharge like you are having can be due to a variety of reasons, including KCS (dry eye), a scratch/ulcer on the cornea, an eye infection, foreign material in the eye, or another underlying issue. If the discharge is persistent and is starting to make the eye goopy, I would commend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her eye issue, as some can cause permanent damage that would benefit from being addressed quickly. I would have her examined, have any necessary testing done (tear production, stain for scratches, pressure check for glaucoma if needed) and start on any treatment she may need to help resolve it. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The stool sounds normal after a deworming, I would monitor it for now. If it contains blood or becomes more watery then I would have Cookie assessed, but otherwise I would see if it firms up in a couple days. In regards to the eye. If the eye doesn't look significantly better now than it did 3 days ago then I would have it rechecked with your vet. Eyes either get better quickly, or get much worse quickly. The discharge that you have shown could be normal, or could be a sign of a perforation. I recommend a recheck as soon as possible. Best of luck with Cookie!
