Is a dog with sarcoptic mange still contagious during treatment?

It's difficult to say for certain, since eggs may continue to hatch and the new adult mites could be contagious. At this point it is probably unlikely that there are adults that would be contagious so if your other dog has been treated preventatively I would think it is safe for them to be together. To be safe it would probably be best for you to wear gloves until Waffles's treatment is complete.

Sarcoptic mange can actually cross species, but should not last long on humans. They may make you feel itchy for a little while, but will go away within 24 hours. I've had a great amount of exposure to dogs with sarcoptes and have had the transient itchiness on my arms too. It has never lasted more than a couple of hours on me. In the meantime, rinse your arms with some cool water and soap. Wash your sheets and consider not having close contact with your dog until the infestation is under control. If you are itching for more than 24 hours and have red spots on your arms, then you should consult your physician.

A good bath followed by a sulfur lyme dip once a week should help speed things up. Sometimes dogs that have scabies also have a secondary bacterial and/or fungal infection. Systemic antibiotic and/or antifungal therapy is necessary to treat the skin if a secondary infection is present. Once treated appropriately, It usually takes 4-8 wks for all of the hair to grow back/mites gone. I would have a veterinarian look at his skin and prescribe you the appropriate treatment. You can safely dip her again, but there is no guarantee that she will not be contagious (assuming she has sarcoptic mange). In order to know whether she will still be contagious, she would have to be tested by a veterinarian for the presence of the mites. I hope that helps and Lady B gets better soon.

Hi there. I would recommend washing your hands thoroughly after handling the puppy, and don't allow any close physical contact with your clothing, etc. if possible. Scabies mites do not survive very long off of the host, so there is likely not much risk of infecting your dogs by touching them when you get home - but if you want to be extra safe, you could take a shower and change your clothes before petting or snuggling with them. Alternatively, if your dogs are on an oral flea/tick medication like Nexgard or Bravecto, you shouldn't need to worry about sarcoptic mange at all because these meds will protect them against this.

The only way to definitively diagnose mange (Demodex) is by skin scrapings which should be repeated every 2-3 weeks during treatment until 2 negative skin scrapings are found. Make sure that the flea and tick medication prescribed will also treat mites (milbemycin or moxidectin) and keep in mind that the dosage frequency is different for mite treatment than it is for flea preventative. Treatment needs to continue for 1-2 months after there is a negative skin scraping. Steroids are usually contraindicated in treatment of Demodex. Demodex mites are not contagious to other animals so your other dogs may not be affected.

Mange may be contagious for weeks and also there is a risk she may be carrying other diseases such as flu, at least 3weeks isolation would be recommended and institute monthly mange prevention for at least 3 months in your other cats
