My dog licked garlic butter. Will she be okay? Vet or just watch?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Koda! My biggest concern is the butter more than the garlic especially now that she is vomiting. High amounts of fat can cause severe gastro-intestinal upset and/or pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can be mild (just vomiting, diarrhea, not eating) to very severe. Garlic causes oxidative damage to the red blood cells causing an anemia. A lot of it probably could cause stomach upset. Since it has been 12 hours and now she is coughing I would get her seen as soon as possible by your Vet. Good luck!

However, garlic and butter both can affect her in different ways, especially by causing gastrointestinal symptoms like the vomiting. If you think she ate a large amount, she should be evaluated right away as that can be a significant toxicity. Also, begonias are very toxic to dogs sometimes resulting in kidney failure so if she ate any, she should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. If she only licked it and didn't eat any I wouldn't be too concerned. Signs to watch out for that she ate some and is now ill include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, blood in stool or vomit, or painful abdomen. If you do see those symptoms, a vet visit is best.

However, in reality this should be a very small amount and he should be fine even without inducing vomiting as this was a very small amount. Good luck and have a great day!

I can understand your concern. Typically there isn’t enough raw garlic to be of concern when used in a condiment and especially if a small bite was consumed. Bonnie will likely be fine. If you want to be absolutely sure you can take her in for some bloodwork to check her organs and make sure everything looks good. Otherwise, just monitor her for the next few days for any symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, or lack of appetite and get her seen right away by your vet if she becomes ill. This may result though in gastrointestinal upset. Watch your pup for symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, inappetence and/or diarrhea. I am sorry that Cuddles is trying to eat your hair product but good news she will likely be just fine. I would recommend to keep a close eye on her over the next couple of days for any lethargic, decreased appetite, vomiting or diarrhea. If any abnormal symptoms seen, contact your veterinarian for an exam.
