My dog ate garlic bread. Is it dangerous? Should I go to the vet?

I am sorry to hear about Snickers! Luckily an ingestion of this size is not a real concern for toxicity, so I would not worry about him eating this tiny piece of garlic bread. Garlic and onions can be toxic, but we only see these effects when ingested in large amounts.

This is likely not enough garlic to pose a serious risk of toxicity. At worst, you may see some mild stomach upset. Withhold food for 24 hours and feed a bland diet in small, frequent amount until symptoms resolve.

This may result though in gastrointestinal upset. Watch your pup for symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, inappetence and/or diarrhea. I would take Zeus into a vet immediately. Garlic is toxic to dogs, and because the garlic was a powder, it would be even more concentrated and take less of it to cause toxic symptoms. Toxic symptoms can include vomiting, which you are seeing, and garlic toxicity leads to anemia. Please take Zeus into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now for treatment.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Koda! My biggest concern is the butter more than the garlic especially now that she is vomiting. High amounts of fat can cause severe gastro-intestinal upset and/or pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can be mild (just vomiting, diarrhea, not eating) to very severe. Garlic causes oxidative damage to the red blood cells causing an anemia. A lot of it probably could cause stomach upset. Since it has been 12 hours and now she is coughing I would get her seen as soon as possible by your Vet. Good luck!
