My dog ate an allergy pill and is listless. Should I be worried?

He should be fine. You may see some vomiting, diarrhea and/or lethargy. He would need to ingest 8 of the pills for there to be a risk of toxicity. If necessary, withhold food for 24 hours, allowing small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until any symptoms of GI upset resolve. Transition slowly to his regular diet afterwards. If symptoms persist or worsen, have him examined by your veterinarian.

This particular medication has two medications that should be fairly well tolerated by dogs but can cause mild sedation as it contains an antihistamine and dextromethorphan. Phenylephrine, however, could be toxic due to cardiac side effects. Also, there may be sweeteners such as xylitol which is highly toxic to dogs. My recommendation would be to call the ASPCA poison control at (888) 426-4435 and make a visit to the vet as soon as you can with Happy this evening as he could be experiencing side effects of the medication or have a different problem entirely. Coughing in the first place is worrisome as older dogs are highly prone to heart problems which can lead to both the cough and the lethargy. I hope this helps, and I hope Happy gets better soon!

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! Tack may be less energetic from the antihistamine. Antihistamines can cause sedation so this may explain the lack of energy. The antihistamine should not have caused the stretching of the neck so if you think that she is having trouble breathing and stretching her neck to breath, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her right away. Allergy reactions can become very severe and affect breathing. If she is still doing this, I would get her seen right away. If not, then I would wait until the antihistamine wears off and see if her energy returns back to normal. If the allergy symptoms return or she is still sedated, I would get her seen by a veterinarian for an examination and further testing / treatment. I hope this helps! If the entire intact pill was in the vomit you probably don't need to worry and she may be tired after vomiting. If it seemed to be punctured or partially dissolved then there might be a chance for toxicity depending on what type of DayQuil it was and what the active ingredients are. If it was punctured repost your question and either take a picture of the box or list the active ingredients.

Well that's not good! Overdose is uncommon but it can produce excitement, seizures, lethargy, comas, and respiratory depression. More than likely, Zoey will be more sedate than usual, but if you see any of those signs I mentioned above, take her into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

Hello. Atopica does not typically have a side effect of lethargy. Overdoses or adverse reactions can result in lethargy, so if she continues to be letthargic I would have her checked. Your vet may need to check her white blood cell levels or her liver values. I hope she feels better soon!
