Dog panting and drinking after topical flea treatment. Is it serious?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 7 years old | 100 lbs

I used the hertz ultra triple action drops for ticks, fleas, and mosquitos 24 hours ago. She has been panting alot and drinking alot of water today. I looked up reviews on this product and seen some horrible things that have happened to people's pets on there. Mostly to cats though but some dogs. I gave her some benadryl tonight and it settled her down and is sleeping. Do i need to worry about this?

Poor girl. Panting and drinking a lot of water can indicate that she is having a hypersensitivity reaction to the product. Although this product is considred safe for pets, it has been known to have more side effects than some other products on the market. If she is settled now then that is a good sign that she may be recovering from this. The Benadryl should help her with her mild reaction. Continue to monitor Legend for any signs of a serious problem which includes: excessive vomiting, continuous panting for more than 30 mins or so, severe lethargy (unresponsiveness, etc), lack of appetite, or pale gums. If seen then Legend needs to see your local vet (or ER vet) right away for treatment.
I hope that Legend continues to improve with the Benadryl, and I would definitely recommend avoiding this medication in the future. There are safer products out there such as Nexgard, Bravecto, Simparica or Advantage. Best wishes moving forward with Legend. Take care!

This happens particularly often when a cat mange to lick and ingest some of the product. These symptoms are usually mild and go away after 1-2hrs. If your Fennekin was acting like that, I suspect it was reaction to the flea treatment. If she is calm now, you need to monitor her at home for the next few hours. However, if she continues to breath fast or breath with open mouth, please take her to your nearest vets without delay.

My dog is lethargic after Advantix. Is it a flea treatment reaction?

I agree, it's impossible to know if this is unrelated (symptoms like this could be due to a compressed disc in the spine or cranial abdominal pain) or a reaction to the flea medication. I recommend to play it safe and have Harvey examined by the veterinarian. The doctor will likely get an idea of pain or skeletal abnormality from the physical exam. You may also wash him in Dawn dish soap to remove the flea product just in case. Be very gentle when handling him. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Why is my dog reacting badly to her flea treatment? Is it an allergy?

Yes, Gidget could absolutely be allergic to her flea treatment! Topical products can definitely cause redness, irritation, hair loss or sores at the application site. They can also cause system reactions such as seizures, tremors and trouble walking but these are rare. Oral products can cause vomiting, diarrhea and decreased appetite. Dogs that have epilepsy may be more prone to have increased seizure frequency but this is also not likely. Extremely rare cases can be anaphylactic reactions of collapse and hypotension and this could be to any product. If you are seeing problems, I would recommend to switch products. While some products have the same active ingredient (like Fipronil), many are different. I have had good flea prevention and very low reactions to Comfortis, Simparica and Revolution. Remember that itching all over can be related to fleas not dying from your product, food allergy or environmental allergies. I hope I answered your question!

Dog panting, scratching after rabies vaccine and flea treatment?

The panting might be a reaction to the vaccine although it could also be related to the flea treatment, especially if he has fleas. i would recommend keeping an eye on him, no need to take him to the vet at the moment, i would expect it to resolve in the next 24 hours.

Why is my cat panting and scratching after flea and worm treatment?

Panting is usually a sign of serious respiratory distress in cats and I would not expect this as a side effect of nitenpyram or piperazine. I would recommend taking Pudge to an emergency veterinarian if you continue to see him panting. If he has fleas it's not uncommon for them to cause discomfort or increased itchiness as they start to die so I wouldn't be concerned about scratching. Nitenpyram only lasts about 24 hours so you should follow up with a longer term flea preventative.

Why is my dog panting and nesting after drinking pond water?

Poor Flea! Given the suddenness of her symptoms, I would be concerned that she may have ingested something toxic. The duck pond could have contained an algae that is toxic to dogs, and she ingested it when drinking from the pond. Without seeing her in person, I can't say this for certain, but it is concerned she is panting and unable to stay still. I would take her into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her now so that the cause of her symptoms are diagnosed and treated.
