My dog's leg is red and shaking after cast removal. ER vet?

It's not normal but some dogs won't bear weight on the leg that they remember being hurt. Some dogs actually need some physical therapy in order to use the leg again. I recommend to speak with your veterinarian about next steps and how to get Nico to use his leg again. I would also prevent any excessive licking by having him wear an elizabethan collar. The leg may be itchy and my need a bath (don't do this however without the OK from your vet). I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

The swelling is very bad. You are correct to be concerned. I suggest you get him back to the vet ASAP to have the bandage removed and replaced. He is a lot of pain for sure which is why he is trying to bite. The fracture is unstable at this stage so you can't just take the bandage off and leave it like that. The vet should put on a full length cast that incorporates the foot. If you don't get this treated immediately the blood/nerve supply may end up being compromised to the foot. This is an emergency.

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Bentley's care today! Lameness and/or possible leg pain and shaking can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Poor girl. This sounds very serious indeed. Black discoloration is a sign of possible necrosis (dying off of healthy tissue) and the swelling is likely cutting off circulation of proper blood flow to the leg. I would recommend taking her in to your vet immediately. Do not give over the counter human pain meds as these can cause acute kidney or liver failure in dogs. It’s best to only treat her with pain meds and additional treatment through your vet. Hello, sorry to hear about your pup. If there is swelling, her toes (if uncovered) feel cold, if the bandage is wet, if your puppy cannot stop bothering at the bandage than she should be seen tonight. If it seems like her skin is rubbing against the bandage but her toes are still pink and warm, the bandage is not wet, and she is using her leg comfortably, then you can wait until tomorrow. However, any doubt, then you should have her evaluated tonight over tomorrow. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It sounds like the leg is very painful, and I would not try to examine it yourself as she may get upset. Instead, I recommend taking her into the vet to have it examined, and have some pain medication prescribed. It's best to have a vet examine it to make sure the underlying structures weren't damaged by getting twisted up in the shower curtain. Please do not give her any human pain medications, many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Because she had this accident last week and is still not using the leg, I would take her into the vet today.
