My dog won't put weight on his leg after cast removal. Is this normal?

I suspect that lump is related to the plate removal but I do recommend to call your veterinarian. They may want to see her before three days. Sometimes pets don’t realize that the previously broken leg is fixed. Sometimes there is still residual pain. I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian if physical therapy would benefit Kenya. Casts or bandages are rarely placed after most orthopedic or soft tissue surgeries. Depending upon the procedure performed, Diesel may need to rest to allow his wound to heal, so perhaps he shouldn’t be weight bearing yet. It is also possible that he is still painful despite the prescribed pain medication, or may be experiencing excessive sedation from the pain medication, depending on which medication he was given. At this point, I recommend calling your vet to discuss if any modifications should be made in Diesel’s medication doses or if he should be examined by your vet. I hope he feels better soon!

Poor Cici! No, it's not normal that she shakes a lot when she puts pressure on her leg, and that tells me she is in pain. It's also concerning that the area is quite red. Given she has had a problem with the leg since January and she's still having problems with it, I do think taking her into an ER vet now is the best option. Best of luck!

Poor girl. : ( It sounds like she is tweaking it a bit when she tries to do extrenuous exercise, which is expected, especially since she still has hardware in place in the leg. Her muscles also can grow tired quicker and become inflamed, which can cause some limping after increased movement. This sounds pretty normal at this stage in the healing process. However, if you are noticing any excessive swelling around the area, drainage or signs of infection, then she should be seen by your vet. Otherwise, follow-up your vet as scheduled to check on things and hopefully the leg is healing well via the post surgery x-rays that they will take. I hope that Olly's leg heals well. This is due to the fact that muscles have not been used as much while it was on. It can take some time to rebuild some strength. However, if she is not making progress walking more normally, she needs to see her veterinarian. Most of the time, I see the normal gait return within several days. I hope this information helps!

I’m sorry to hear about Teddy! Yes it can take a while for animals to bear weight on the broken leg. This is especially true of the small breeds who so easily get around on 3 legs. If it’s been 14 days and Teddy still isn’t putting ANY weight on the foot, please go see your vet to make sure things are ok. Also definitely give any pain medication you’ve been given. Is this the leg where the catheter was? Sometimes the catheter can bother them and make them lick excessively at this area. If that is the case I would put the ecollar back on him and have the veterinarian take a look at him. If it is not from the catheter I would have your veterinarian look at his fur to make sure he is ok. Licking can be from pain, irritation, boredom, allergies, etc. There are many different causes. The concern is if he continues to lick it can lead to other issues. If he continues to lick he can create a hotspot (localized infection) and a granuloma where he is licking.
