My dog won't use her leg after injury. When should I see a vet?

How do I examine my doggies front left leg, she keeps holding it up and not using it much. She got herself somehow twisted up on the shower curtain last week and a string wrapped around her leg just above 'elbow'. Swelling went down right away, normal color, and circulation came back in a matter of a few seconds. At first she was using it more, it was bruised and she didn't seem to have a lot of feeling I her lower part of foot, now it seems as if she feels everything but won't use it much.

It sounds like the leg is very painful, and I would not try to examine it yourself as she may get upset. Instead, I recommend taking her into the vet to have it examined, and have some pain medication prescribed. It's best to have a vet examine it to make sure the underlying structures weren't damaged by getting twisted up in the shower curtain. Please do not give her any human pain medications, many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Because she had this accident last week and is still not using the leg, I would take her into the vet today.

    I think the best and ideal way to proceed would be to have her checked by your local veterinarian to determine the severity and type of injury and give you the best advices on how to treat those injuries.

It needs to be cleaned sterilely, he may need x-rays to see if there are any possible broken bones, he needs antibiotics to prevent an infection, some of the cuts may need sutures, and he will need pain medication. Dog can't use front leg after accident, won't let me touch it. Help!
If she is unable to use her front leg and cannot extend it, it has potentially been traumatically damged for example a fracture. It may just be a strain or sprain but if she cant use it you will need to take her to the vet asap in case it is broken. If ot is broken the sooner you get there the more options there are for treatment.

I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. My dog is limping and holding her leg up. Should I take her to vet?
She may have torn her cruciate ligament, have a problem with her knee cap, have a fracture, etc. Since she seems to be in pain, you should take her to your vet today for an orthopedic examination. Your vet can take an x-ray, if needed, to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. An anti-inflammatory and pain medications can be prescribed to help relieve any pain. Poor pup! She could could have torn her cranial cruciate ligament in her knee or done damage to the meniscus in her knee. It's concerning that she has been limping on three legs for four days now, and it's time to see a vet. Rest her tonight, no running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when she's one. Have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning for a lameness exam and x-rays.

Your vet can assess the leg during the physical exam and may recommend x-rays to help determine the cause of Tammh’s limp. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to Tammh without consulting with your vet.
