My dog's fractured leg is swollen and red under bandage. Is it an emergency?

Yes, I would be a bit worried. I suggest you take him back to your vet for a recheck exam. It is hard for me to give advice without seeing the issue. That is excessive. I see there is a bandage--I do not know what is under that but it needs to be removed to relieve the swelling of the toes. Just make sure he does not lick the incision after that gets removed and if it is open then you may need to take him to a ER tonight to have a new wrap applied

The image quality makes it very difficult to see the images in the amount of detail needed to properly assess them, but it does appear that the bone was fractured and is healing. The bone appears to not be healing straight, likely because the leg was not splinted when the fracture first occurred. You should definitely continue to monitor the bandaged/splinted leg. If you notice that Dixie's toes are blue or are cold to the touch the bandage/splint needs to be removed immediately and re-wrapped. I would definitely having a veterinarian re-wrap the bandage/splint as there are special bandaging/splinting techniques and materials used to accomplish different things. Please have Ann examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER today. That wound will likely need to be explored and debrided surgically. This will require anesthesia. A culture/sensitivity and biopsy of the area should be submitted as well. The C&S will identify any bacteria as well as the best antibiotic to use in treatment. Even though she was on antibiotics, if the bacteria was not susceptible to them, they would be ineffective. A biopsy will rule out neoplasia (cancer). Either can cause delayed healing or non-healing. If infection gets into the bone, it could turn into a life threatening condition. Place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking until she sees a doctor.

This looks like a severe bite wound and it would need to be examined by a veterinarian. This wound needs to be cleaned and disinfected and your dog will need pain medicine and antibiotics, Please take Tyson to a veterinarian for wound care. The swelling may be a sign of a fracture or infection.

Hello. I am sorry to hear about Maximus. It sounds like Maximus has a very severe infection and requires a visit to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Also, bandages that are not applied properly (too tight, over wet skin, not with pressure from bottom to top, etc) can very easily damage limbs, and it is possible to make your infection and swelling much worse, and in some cases an inappropriately applied bandage has led to amputation of limbs being necessary. I would recommend taking the bandage off and getting Maximus to a vet right away. If you can't go tonight, then get an e-collar to stop Maximus from chewing at the limbs, and bring him first thing tomorrow, but tonight would be better. Best of luck with Maximus!

Check the temperature of the affected leg. It should be approximately the same temperature as the other leg. If it is much cooler you need to take your dog to the vet for a recheck. If the temperature is similar you can rebandage the leg, but make sure it is not too tight. One way to awoid this is to put lots of padding around the leg before putting the previously unrolled and then rerolled sticky bandage on. It may also be a good idea to confine your dog to rest. You may have to rebandage the leg as soon as the swelling has subsided, as the bandage will loosen up. If the swelling does not go down within 24 hours, you will need to take Sterling to your vet for an exam.
