My female dog is in heat. Can I safely wipe her vaginal area?

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This is not normal for a heat cycle. The perivulvar area looks red and inflamed which is most likely from the diaper. The diaper is keeping too much heat and moisture in/around the vulva. You may be keeping the diaper on for too many hours. If you continue with the diaper this area will likely get infected. You will need to leave the diaper off and you can treat the affected area with this: ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/3-oz-3-fl-oz-hot-spot-antimicr-2877113 ) If she is bleeding a lot you will need to keep her in a kennel, bathroom or kitchen area so she does not track blood around your house. If you decide to use canine diapers, make sure you change them often (7-8 times a day). A wet or dirty diaper can cause skin irritations and urinary tract infections . If your dog wears diapers day and night, you should wash its genitals three or four times a day .

Doggy diapers are definitely a good way to keep from having to clean-up blood all day. The cone may be necessary if she tries to take off the diaper, but some dogs tolerate the diaper well. Keeping her outside is another option if the weather is OK, but make sure you have a good fence to keep out any possible intact males in the neighborhood...they will smell her from a mile away. Getting her spayed will prevent future cycles. You can have this done about a month after she's out of heat. Yes keeping her inside so it can stay clean would be best. You can apply lubricant to it such as KY to keep it moist. It does usually resolve when the heat cycle passes and the hormones settle down or getting her spayed at your regular vet will fix it faster.

Yes, they do make doggie diapers with removal pads. I have seen some clients even fashion children's diapers on their pets (you must cut out a hole for the tail). This must be changed a few times every day or as it gets soiled. If you do not plan on breeding Millie, if she gets spayed, then she will not be able to have puppies and she will not have a heat cycle either. It looks like your pet has a case of vaginitis, inflammation of the vagina, or she has an ongoing discharge, possibly due to an infection in the cervix or uterus. She may need antibiotics, especially if she is off her appetite, drinking an excesssive amount of water &/ or peeing a lot, or seems unhappy or lethargic. Otherwise, if she seems normal, give her a few days to see if things begin to clear up. You can use warm water, or a gentle facial wipe to keep the area clean, & monitor for any further changes. I would keep on hand some doggy diapers to help collect the bloody discharge. This will help protect your furniture and household items from getting stained. You can also stock up on some puppy wipes to help clean her up and keep her from developing odors. The menstrual cycle usually lasts 2-4 weeks on average. Best of luck with your pet Nala.
