My dog's in heat: When, how long, and how often to change diapers?

The constant use of diapers could result in urinary infections, and sores from the urine and poop touching her skin a lot of the time. Yes, they do make doggie diapers with removal pads. I have seen some clients even fashion children's diapers on their pets (you must cut out a hole for the tail). This must be changed a few times every day or as it gets soiled. If you do not plan on breeding Millie, if she gets spayed, then she will not be able to have puppies and she will not have a heat cycle either. They stay in place well but you will likely need to wash the diaper every other day (as its hard to keep blood off the sides). Doggy diapers are definitely a good way to keep from having to clean-up blood all day. The cone may be necessary if she tries to take off the diaper, but some dogs tolerate the diaper well. Keeping her outside is another option if the weather is OK, but make sure you have a good fence to keep out any possible intact males in the neighborhood...they will smell her from a mile away. You can use a diaper on your dog when you are unable to keep an eye on her. However, if you do this routinely it will be even more difficult to potty train her. Once the doapernis wet it needs to be removed soon so it will not cause urine scalding on the skin. Young puppies need to be walked every hour or so when starting potty training. If this is not feasible for you then I would recommend placing puppy pads around the house if you are unable to walk her outside and/or keeping her to a confined area. Crate training her will also help speed up potty training. Use positive reinforcement, like treats and lots of verbal praise, when she does go outside. It can take a couple of months to get your puppy fully potty trained. The keys to success are patience and persistence. I hope this helps.
