My dog's vulva is inflamed and pink after heat. Is it vaginitis?

Why does my dogs vagina look like this? She was recently in heat I’m not sure if she’s out of it yet but noticed her vagina was inflamed and just today I noticed it was pink. Yesterday her whole vagina looked like her bottom half.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like your pet has a case of vaginitis, inflammation of the vagina, or she has an ongoing discharge, possibly due to an infection in the cervix or uterus. She may need antibiotics, especially if she is off her appetite, drinking an excesssive amount of water &/ or peeing a lot, or seems unhappy or lethargic. Otherwise, if she seems normal, give her a few days to see if things begin to clear up. You can use warm water, or a gentle facial wipe to keep the area clean, & monitor for any further changes. Hopefully, all will be normal soon. Take care.

Which could be a spot of inflammation which could possibly be due to an infection in the area. In case some discharge is present, a deeper and more serious infection could be there as well.
A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.

It is unfortunately very difficult for me to tell based on this one photo if this is normal or abnormal. I suggest you take her to your vet for an exam. It would be abnormal for a spayed female dog to have vaginal discharge. If there is discharge, it either means there could be a stump pyometra or some type of urinary issue as both the reproductive and urinary systems empty into the same area.

If the skin around the vulva is discolored this can often be normal but can also indicate a skin infection. It is best if you have a vet examine her in person.

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. This is not normal for a heat cycle. The perivulvar area looks red and inflamed which is most likely from the diaper. The diaper is keeping too much heat and moisture in/around the vulva. You may be keeping the diaper on for too many hours. If you continue with the diaper this area will likely get infected. Why does my dog's vulva look sore and swollen? Is it an infection?

You can try to use chlorhexidine containing pads (such as the Douxo chlorhexidine 3% PS pads) to clean the are twice daily for 7 days. You may find these online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

My dog's vagina is swollen after heat. Could it be prolapse?

This looks like a vaginal prolapse. That is when the vagina turns inside out. This is very swollen and needs to be lubricated and then manipulated back into place. You can clean it gently with a warm wet cloth, then apply KY Jelly to it or Vaseline to protect the sensitive skin from injury, then I'd bring her in tomorrow morning to get this examined and treated. My female dog's vulva is red. What could be causing this symptom?

Inflammation in that area can make it look red. Dogs can get vaginitis, infections, tumors or it can get inflamed if she has been licking at it more than normal. Pay close attention to her urination habits as a UTI can cause pain which can cause increased licking. If the redness does not go away after a few days, if she seems uncomfortable or itchy, or if you see a change her urination, have her seen by her veterinarian. My dog has red scabs around her vagina after heat. What could it be?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely saliva staining. Often times licking usually means itchiness which in turn could potentially be due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

My dog in heat has a strong vulva odor. Could it be vaginitis?

It is possible that she is suffering from vaginitis as usually a strong odour is not present during a heat cycle. with vaginitis discharge is not always present but a bad odour is definitely a good reason to suspect it. i would recommend to take her to the vet as she will probably need an antibiotic course.

Since she has improved, I would continue to monitor her for now. If this does not improve, I recommend you have her reevaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may decide at that point to try a different antibiotic if they think it is because of an infection. Best of luck!
