My dog is in heat. How to prepare, what to buy, and how long?

A heat cycle lasts approximately 18-21 days. Spaying her prior to her first heat cycle will prevent this from occurring. Most dogs come into heat for the first time around 7-10 months of age with larger breeds starting their cycles later. You will notice swelling of her vulva and mammary chain. She will spot and bleed as well. Some dogs keep themselves very clean and you only see small amounts of discharge, others will require diapers. You may observe some behavioral changes as well. Most will be on average around 7 days long. A fair amount of blood coloured fluid will be produced, however dogs are pretty good at cleaning themselves up. About 1 month after she has finished bleeding, I would talk to your vet about getting her desexed to prevent pyometra (pus filled uterus), decrease her risks of mastitis, and many different types of cancers, and prevent unwanted pregnancies. Doggy diapers are definitely a good way to keep from having to clean-up blood all day. The cone may be necessary if she tries to take off the diaper, but some dogs tolerate the diaper well. Keeping her outside is another option if the weather is OK, but make sure you have a good fence to keep out any possible intact males in the neighborhood...they will smell her from a mile away. Getting her spayed will prevent future cycles. You can have this done about a month after she's out of heat. Typically the first period is often the hardest for pets; however, very rarely do you need medication to help them get through. If she is sleeping but still eating, drinking and going potty normally, then I would recommend just a warm compress applied to her belly for 5-10 minutes twice a day, as needed for mild discomfort. She will start to feel better as her menstrual cycle progresses. A pets period lasts 1-2 weeks on average. Take care of that fur baby!

That is true - typically the first heat cycle occurs around 9 months in a small breed dog but it can occur as early as 6 months. You should make sure there is no potential for her to either escape from your yard or for other dogs to get into your yard to avoid an accidental breeding, and should avoid taking her in public when she is in heat. She will first go through a proestrus phase where the vulva swells and there is bloody discharge: this lasts 1-2 weeks. You will want to have diaper for her to wear to decrease the mess. Estrus comes next and will be when she is fertile and will ovulate - this lasts another 5-10 days but there is no longer any bloody discharge. If you don't plan to breed Mini in the future you may want to discuss having her spayed.

When she bleeds, she is in pre-estrus. This is the time where she prepares for estrus (heat). This means she will be bleeding for about 2-3 weeks, continuously. Then the bleeding gets less and her discharge will be more of a clear red-tinged discharge. This is when she actually will go into heat for another 3 weeks, approximately, and this is where is can conceive. You should wait until about two months after her heat cycle is over before having her spayed.
