My dog hit his head, seems fine. What symptoms should I watch for?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 9 days old | 13 lbs

My dog hit his head really hard on the wall but seemed to be fine after the hit. He was running and playing like nothing happens. Should I be worried!?

He will probably be OK, however I would closely observe him for the next 24 hrs for signs of unusual behaviors, lethargy, or vomiting. If any of this occurs, Jax needs to be taken to a veterinarian or emergency room right away to assess him for more serious complications.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can continue to monitor him for signs of head injury such as weakness, dullness, crying out in pain or seizures. If none of these signs are noted in the next 2-3 days then he is likely to be ok. Otherwise, if you are concerned at all about how he is doing, I recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. Best of luck!

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Nova is acting fine afterwards, it is likely that she will be just fine. Clinical signs of head trauma include lethargy, unbalance, weakness, changes in behavior and/or collapse. If she continues to be fine in the next 24-48 hours, she is likely to be fine. Good luck! I will keep my fingers crossed for your girl! Get some rest tonight.
