My dog is in heat and mated. Is she pregnant? Why is he whining?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is a possibility but dogs can also have fake pregnancies- all the signs of a pregnancy but with no fetuses. I recommend taking her to a vet for an exam. They can take an X-ray 45 days after mating or look sooner with an ultrasound. Good luck and kisses to Luna!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Ruby! Sadly diapers are not made to prevent mating, they always find away. The crying is likely because Ruby is feeling some discomfort after mating. It should subside. Since she mated it is likely she is pregnant. If this is something you do not want then see your Vet to discuss options. The diarrhea is likely not related to the breeding. Diarrhea can be from intestinal parasites, hormones from being in heat, stress, viral or bacterial infections, ate something gross, food allergy/intolerance. Since the diarrhea is severe (leaking) I would fast her for 12-24 hours then start feeding her a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice until 2 normal stools. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. If the diarrhea persists I recommend having a Vet exam. If the crying persists then she should see a Vet today. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

If your dog is otherwise acting normally (eating, drinking, peeing, pooping) and not coughing, sneezing, having vomiting or diarrhea then yes, he could be smelling females in heat. If you are not planning on breeding him it is suggest you have him neutered. Many dogs run away in search of females and they can be difficult to manage. It is healthier for them overall to be neutered if not being used for breeding. Hope this answers your question. Best wishes!

Are any other behaviors abnormal? Is he acting painful or sick? Maybe take him for a walk and see how he does away from the female. If you are still concerned that there may be a medical problem then I would recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Based on your pictures I wouldn't call it heavy bleeding. Dogs mate when the female is in heat (during bleeding). Breeding may have triggered some blood that had been pooling. I wouldn't worry unless it continues or she is lethargic. But yes, she can still get pregnant. Good luck!

If she has access to male intact dogs breeding is always possible. You won't know for 5-6 weeks if she is possible pregnant. Have a good day!
