Why did my dog's private area darken during heat? Is she pregnant?

Hello, It is not possible to tell if a dog has had sex. The vulva, or external female genitalia, experiences normal swelling during the heat cycle. It does not appear raised or the tissue inflamed. I would monitor the area for any changes. Some pigment changes can be normal in dogs. If it starts to have an odor or seems to bother her or get bumpy then I would have it checked

She is going out of heat and you will Roxie the swelling start to decrease. If there is no mucous vaginal discharge and she is acting normally, then I would not worry about the skin changing colors. There is not a known condition that causes this, but it is normal and usually will turn back with time. You may notice this happen on her belly too and it does not have to be related to a heat cycle

If Coochie is not neutered and they mated then yes your female dog is very likely pregnant. Coochie crying and acting this way because your female is in heat. He likely isn't sick and will return to normal once she is out of heat. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Based on your pictures I wouldn't call it heavy bleeding. Dogs mate when the female is in heat (during bleeding). Breeding may have triggered some blood that had been pooling. I wouldn't worry unless it continues or she is lethargic. But yes, she can still get pregnant. Good luck!

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! Based on the photos you provided, the bumps appear to be papules / pustules that indicate a skin infection. This could be from her licking at the area when she was in heat (which is common). I would disinfect the area with and keep clean with a spray called Miconahex. This is a antimicrobial / antifungal spray that can treat superficial skin infections quite effectively. You can find this spray online quite easily. If you begin to notice any irritation after using the spray, discontinue immediately. If the skin condition worsens or does not resolve, I would recommend scheduling an appointment with a veterinarian to have this looked at. Additional medications may be needed to treat this.
