My dog has green sticky eye discharge, red eyelid. Is it pinkeye?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Wirehaired Pointing Griffon | Male | neutered | 8 months and 6 days old | 48 lbs

Hello, My dog is a wirehaired pointing griffon male of 8 months. One of my dog's eye has greenish/yellowish sticky secretions since this morning. Usually (and on the other eye), they're more brownish. The eye is also more red under the lower eyelid. I would like to know if it could be a conjunctivitis or only a sign of irritation. The photos were taken 10 minutes apart. Thanks Catherine

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Wiski!

Yes! A viral or bacterial conjunctivitis or allergies is the most common cause for his signs. There are contagious doggie "pink eye" that they get from doggie daycare or playing with other dogs.

It is best for your Vet to examine Wiskie and prescribe eye safe drops or ointment.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best!
