My dog has green eye gunk and bloodshot eyes, but seems fine. What to do?

  If the discharge from his eye is thick and green it is likely conjunctivitis or an eye infection that will benefit from topical ophthalmic antibiotic drops (e.g. tobramycin ophthalmic drops) or ointment (e.g. terramycin). Your vet may also recommend doing a fluorescein stain of his eye to determine whether he has a corneal scratch or ulcer that is likely painful and would benefit from topical ophthalmic atropine drops. The risk of leaving it untreated is that it could worsen and require a longer/more expensive treatment. Good luck!

  Hello. Luna may have some irritation going on in the eye. She may have picked up an upper respiratory infection or scratched the cornea a bit. Since the eye is a little worse than it was yesterday, I would really consider having her examined as soon as possible. If you can not have her seen this weekend, you can gently clean the eye with a little saline ( pick up some artificial tears at your pharmacy ). If she begins squinting or pawing at her eye, you may need to get her to an emergency clinic, otherwise, make an appointment with your veterinarian Monday morning.   Thank you for submitting your question regarding Romeo. He may have an eye infection. He could also be experiencing allergies, a corneal ulcer or scratch across his eye, a condition known as dry eye or even a change in pressure within the eye. He will need to see his veterinarian to know for sure. The veterinarian will examine his eyes with a special instrument known as an ophthalmolscope. Eye tests can help to reach a diagnosis as well. In the meantime, keep the eye clean if possible and do not allow him to paw at the eye. Place an E-collar on him if necessary. I hope this information helps!

Unfortunately, it is hard to know how to best approach this at home as it is not possible to know what this is just by seeing a picture of the eye closed. However, the discharge you describe is concerning for an infection. This would require an examination. This could be something like an ulcer which may require
  antibiotics. An ulcer could in theory result in loss of the function of the eye if severe enough. You can always check with your local humane society as they may offer more affordable veterinary care. Good luck and have a great day!
