When should I give a second glycerin dose for my pet's glaucoma?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 9 years and 5 months old | 30 lbs

My pet was treated for sudden primary glaucoma today. We were given glycerin as an emergency medicine if his eye pressure seems to spike - it has, and i'm currently administering his first round of it. My question is about whether or not the second dosage (3 hours later) is necessary, or if it's only if you notice pressure recurring?

Hello, & than you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am surprised that your veterinarian did not give you more specific directions. Withholding water or any fluids for 3-4 hours after giving the glycerin can increase efficacy & hopefully you will not need the second dose, but if it does spike again, give the second dose. make sure you contact your vet first thing tomorrow morning.
