My pet's eyes are still sticky after conjunctivitis. Should I worry?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | unspayed | 3.7 lbs

Honey had come conjunctivitis in bother her eyes and a secondary infection in one - we were given medicine and it has cleared up but she still has damp and a bit sticky tear tracks. It has been 2 days since she stopped her medicine. Is his something to worry about? Thank you.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Without knowing what the medication that was used and not knowing what the diagnosis was from your previous vet, it is difficult to guide you in the right direction. However, if the eyes were treated with an antibiotic and cleared up but are still accumulating thick material, I would recheck with the veterinarian and have the eyes checked for dry eye to see if this is the primary problem. Life long medication is needed if the eyes are diagnosed with dry eye. I hope this helps! Optixcare is an eye ointment that is over the counter that can help with dry eye so if you are unable to get to your vet, you can start with this ointment to see if it makes a difference. Hello. Thank you for using PetCoach. My guess is that Oscar could have keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) which is basically "dry eye". This is not necessarily serious, per se, but needs to have long-term medication to manage/control it. It is easy to test for this - a simple tear test that your vet can do in the office in just a few minutes. My old dog's green eye goop won't clear with prescribed meds.

Dry eye can result in the discharge in the picture you posted and can require more than just Artificial Tears to treat. (That would be more common than an allergy problem especially since only one eye is affected.) I am attaching a handout with more information about dry eye below. https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951823 I would recommend contacting your veterinarian to let them know that the discharge has not resolved with the antibiotic and steroid ointment and ask them if they think a cyclosporin eye medication would be appropriate to try. Why is my dog's eye still running after conjunctivitis medication?

If the problem doesn't seem to be resolved, then I would consider continuing the medication and scheduling a follow up examination with your veterinarian. My dog has recurring conjunctivitis. Is constant medication safe?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Jasmine continues to have problems despite medications, I recommend taking her to the vet for further testing. She may have an underlying condition like dry eye or allergies that is causing the chronic problems. If so, she may need additional medications to treat the primary problem. Your vet will likely test for tear function (which may be abnormal even though you are seeing tears), look for ulcers, or test the pressure of the eye itself. Good luck and kisses to Jasmine!

However, there are some other diseases that really need a very thorough evaluation of the eye to diagnose. I think that if he has not improved on the current therapy, it may be a good idea to check in with your veterinarian. If they are concerned based on their knowledge of his case, they could consider having you consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist. They would be able to perform a thorough evaluation and recommend accordingly. Good luck and have a great day!

Why is my dog's red, watery eye not improving with vet meds?

This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. Since Toby has not improved on his medications, I highly recommend that you have Toby reevaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They can attempt a different course of therapy or possibly refer you to an eye specialist. Further therapy would be based on the findings. Good luck and best wishes!

My dog's eye is still red after conjunctivitis treatment. What now?

Bleu has such pretty eyes!! I would recommend a recheck with your vet now that some of the swelling and redness has resolved. There may be something additional going on that needs to be addressed, or perhaps she needs to receive a different type of eye drops. Be sure and ask your veterinarian to take a close look at Bleu’s eyelids-sometimes, especially in young growing dogs, the lower (and occasionally upper) eyelid can roll onwards and irritate the surface of the eye-This is called entropion and can require surgery to correct. I hope you are able to get Bleu’s eye redness resolved soon!
