My dog pees often, poops loose with mucus. Should I see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 8 months old | 67 lbs

I have a black lab collie mix that is about 2 years old. He is defecating quite frequently, it's not quite a solid and there seems to be a lot of mucus around it. Also urinating like every 5 -10 mins. What's wrong with him? Can I treat him at home or does he need to be seen by a veterinarian?

I am sorry to hear that Nietzsche is urinating and pooping frequently. It sounds like he has a urinary tract infection and an intestinal infection as well. He will need to be seen by your vet to have this treated with antibiotics unfortunately. The vet will also need to run some tests (urinalysis and fecal exam) to make sure the cause of this is found. I would make an appt as soon as you can to get him some relief. I hope that your pet feels better soon. Best wishes and take care.

I'm so sorry Nietsche is having this problem. I certainly understand why you are concerned.

Mucous in the stool is commonly seen in cases of colitis (inflammation of the large intestine) that can be associated with softer stool. There are a large number of causes of and treatment for colitis.

Colitis that continues for more than a few days, or is associated with blood in the stool, vomiting, lethargy or a poor appetite is a reason for a visit to your veterinarian. There are anti-diarrheal medications that your veterinarian can prescribe.

Urinating every 5-10 minutes is rather concerning. We don't commonly see urinary tract infections in males, but I would recommend having Nietzche evaluated by your veterinarian and check a urine sample to see what might be going on.

It sounds like Dobby may have a urinary tract infection or urinary stones. I would highly recommend having him checked by your vet soon to get his urine tested and treated based on what the underlying problem is. Your vet should be able to get to the bottom of the issue quickly with in house testing. The diarrhea is likely due to stress from the urinary issues. You can give him 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in his food daily to help solidify the stools as well as a probiotic (Culturelle found over the counter at any pharmacy) daily. My dog pees and poops constantly. Could it be a neurological issue?

Fecal incontinence is usually neurological as long as it is not diarrhea which can be due to food allergies, intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, or chronic stress colitis. Royal Canin GI dry and canned food may help decrease the volume of stool and is likely the best option for the fecal incontinence which is usually not treatable. Peeing all the time can be caused by renal disease, diabetes, cushings’s disease /hyperadrenocorticism or a UTI. Having a full CBC/Chem/Fructosamine bloodwork panel run + a Urinalysis and Urine Protein Creatinine ratio at another vet’s is an option to rule out these causes of the polyuria which can be managed with medications. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Riley. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian today. Drooling can indicate nausea. This combined with the loose stool are signs of gastrointestinal upset. The dribbling urine though is not a typical sign of GI disease and it is worrisome. If he is dehydrated, he may not be making much urine. His veterinarian will evaluate him and determine if fecal or urine tests are necessary. I hope this information helps!

Oh my. Poor puppy. Female puppies are high risk for getting urinary tract infections and his causes frequent urination, foul smelling urine, and accidents in the home. This is likely what is going on with Hazel. She needs to be seen by your local vet for a urinalysis (urine test) and oral antibiotics if confirmed. She also sounds like she has an upper respiratory infection as well. Both issues can respond to the same antibiotic medication so schedule an appt with your local vet soon to get her the proper treatment. Increased urinaiton is a sign of a urinary tract infection. Have him seen by your vet soon to have his urine tested and then he can get on medication to help resolve this. He is an older dog as well so that vet will ensure there aren't any other complications here as well such as urinary stones. I hope that Domino's urinary issues resolve soon!
