Why is my labrador pooping hard then loose and more frequently?

Loose stools can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. In dogs infected with parvo virus, there can be long term health effects from the infection such as chronic gastrointestinal disease. I would recommend going on a sensitive stomach formula and adding in a probiotic to see if this helps. As always, check the stool for intestinal parasites to make sure a parasite is not the cause. He will need to be seen by your vet to have this treated with antibiotics unfortunately. The vet will also need to run some tests (urinalysis and fecal exam) to make sure the cause of this is found. These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Since Charlie has been having abnormal stools for more than 2-3 days, I think medical intervention is needed at this time. I would be concerned about intestinal parasites and possibly parvovirus since he is so young and not fully vaccinated yet. I would recommend taking Charlie in to your vet and bringing a sample of his stool with you to be tested. Increased production of abnormal stools might be due to different causes: parasitic infestation and dietary indiscretion are the most common but other diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), intestinal bacteria overgrowth cannot be excluded at this stage. Make sure you are providing a good quality and balanced diet and if the problem is not quickly resolving I would recommend to seek your veterinarian advice and to perform a fecal analysis.
