Why is my Golden Retriever foaming at mouth and stopping on stairs?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 65 lbs

We have a 2yr old golden retriever who has been foaming at the mouth slightly, while playing. She seems to realize that its happening, she stops playing and starts licking her lips/opening her mouth. She also is startled and lays down near me. She is healthy otherwise-eating, drinking,bathroom habits all normal. Also, 3wks ago she was running up the stairs chasing me and stopped midway, not sure if she lost her balance. I know this is vague maybe an ear infection? Tooth issues? Mini seizures??

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rylee. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She seems to be experiencing a variety of symptoms and would benefit from a thorough examination. Some dogs will foam at the mouth if they play too hard. She could be close to overheating. Joint disease could cause her to stop on the stairs. Dental disease and ear infections are additional sources of pain. If it was a small seizure, she most likely would have been non-responsive to you during the episode. The veterinarian will examine her from head to toe and ask you detailed questions regarding the episodes. In the meantime, watch her closely. For example, if she is scratching her ears or shaking her head, this can be a symptom of an infection. Lameness can indicate joint disease. I hope this information helps!

Hi there and thank you for your post! It sounds like Riley may have gotten into something outside. Hypersalivation can be from many possible causes. With his age, I would suspect something irritating (chemical, toad, insect sting) or something stuck in his oral cavity. Have you looked inside his mouth to ensure there isn't a stick or something stuck? If not, I would rinse out his mouth with the hose on low pressure and see if that helps. If there is any swelling, I would give a dose of Benadryl and take him to your veterinarian right away in case this is a severe allergic reaction. The dose of Benadryl would be 100mg if Riley's weight is indeed 100lb. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any further questions / concerns

Why is my dog chewing her mouth, foaming, and acting weird suddenly?

I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian. If you can catch one of these episodes on video, please do so to show the veterinarian. It's possible your pet is having a focal seizure though a cardiovascular problem could cause an altered mentation as well. Try to have her examined today if possible. I hope this helps.

My 5-week-old puppy is shaking and foaming. Is it a seizure?

From your description it is possible that Roxy had a seizure. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. My dog has recurring seizures and foams at mouth. Is it rabies?

HI, I am sorry to hear about your dog. While this MAY be rabies, it most likely is a different type of disease. I can be a primary problem with the brain, another type of infectious disease, or related to internal organ dysfunction. I would highly recommend having your dog evaluated by your veterinarian to try and determine the cause of the seizures and get him on medication(s) to help prevent/stop the seizures from occurring.

Why is my senior dog panting, foaming, and peeing a lot on walks?

It sounds like your dog has trouble breathing which would cause foam coming up from the lungs (due to fluid in the lungs). Urinating frequently could be a sequel to not getting enough oxygen, which then can trigger the urge to urinate. Your dog may be suffering from a heart condition or tumor or other condition that can cause pulmonary edema. This is an emergency and you need to take her to a veterinarian right away, or to a pet ER, for an exam, oxygen supplementation and possibly diuretics and further treatment as indicated by the results of the exam.

If you feel that Dexter may have had a seizure last night, I would have him evaluated by a veterinarian at their next available appointment. There are many causes of seizures including low blood sugar, liver disease such as a shunt, kidney disease, and disease within the cranium or cerebrospinal fluid. Your veterinarian can perform an exam on Dexter and best localize the problem. He/she may recommend bloodwork to help understand what may have happened to Dexter. I hope this is helpful!
