Why is my dog suddenly drooling and foaming after being outside?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 2 years and 9 months old | 100 lbs

My 3 year old golden retriever suddenly started hyper-salivating today. He's been fine all day, a little stressed because I brought home a rescue dog from a shelter, but they were getting along fine. We were outside playing fetch, I brought him inside and noticed his mouth was dripping and foaming. He's never been like this before. I wipe it up and he starts dripping again

Hi there and thank you for your post! It sounds like Riley may have gotten into something outside. Hypersalivation can be from many possible causes. With his age, I would suspect something irritating (chemical, toad, insect sting) or something stuck in his oral cavity. Have you looked inside his mouth to ensure there isn't a stick or something stuck? If not, I would rinse out his mouth with the hose on low pressure and see if that helps. If there is any swelling, I would give a dose of Benadryl and take him to your veterinarian right away in case this is a severe allergic reaction. The dose of Benadryl would be 100mg if Riley's weight is indeed 100lb. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any further questions / concerns
