Is it safe to combine Trifexis and Simparica for my dog?

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 24.7 lbs

I have a 14-month-old mini Australian Shepherd who tested clear on the MDR1 gene mutation, no known health issues. He’s taken Trifexis for 11 months for flea/heartworm prevention, Simparica added 3 months ago for tick prevention. Meds are given with meals 1-2 wks apart. We live in an area where heartworm & ticks are a problem so I need year-round preventives. Are there any known contraindications with this combo, or other meds that provide good protection with minimal side effects?

It is ok to give trifexis and simparica together (staggered by 2 weeks is great). Both of those medications will protect against fleas so there is some overlap with that. If you want to streamline how many medications you are giving Dakota monthly, Another option would be to use sentinel or interceptor instead of the trifexis and give with that with simparica monthly. These products contain the same heart worm preventative (milbemycin) as trifexis but do not contain any medication to kill adult fleas. (Trifexis contains both the milbemycin for heart worm prevention and Spinosad for fleas). That way you would be giving one medication for heart worm prevention (sentinel or interceptor ) and one for flea and tick prevention (simparica). Another option is to continue trifexis and add in a tick collar (such as the preventic collar or the seresto collar). I know there are so many products and options it is confusing !     Gump should be fine as long as each drug was correct for his weight. Simparica is only for fleas and ticks. Trifexis is for heartworm prevention, intestinal parasites and fleas. It doesn't cover ticks. It is common to use TWO drugs to prevent fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites and heartworm and there is not a single product that gets everything.

BUT if this is the first time giving one or both of the drugs then I would give one at a time 2 days apart in case one causes a problem. Then if there are no issues give them together next month. Can I safely combine Simparica and K9 Advantix for my dog's fleas?
Generally, we at Pet Coach recommend using one flea and tick medication. I would recommend only using the K9 advantix on Pistol. It kills fleas, repels fleas, kills flea egg and larvae, kills ticks, repels ticks, and kills and/or repels mosquitoes. Simparica only kills fleas and ticks. You will get everything you need for Pistol's protection with the K9 advantix. I hope this helps!

Puppy on TriFexis: Need oral tick prevention. What are my options?
It is generally not recommended to use two oral products together. It's not to say it's impossible but many of these companies have not done the testing to know if there are interactions. You may discuss this with your regular vet to see if they have any experience with this. Most topical flea and tick products are expected to be safe to use with Trifexis. There is also a collar called a Preventic which is fine to use with oral products. Most people only put the collar on the pet when it is going out to tick areas and they remove it when the pet is not in those areas. Another option is to ask your vet if they would exchange the product for something like Simparica and Interceptor which would get all your parasite concerns. Some clients will also switch products when ticks are in season or when exposure is expected and then switch back once the exposure time is over. My dog has flea allergies. Can I use Simparica and Advantix?
They are each labeled for once a month so it is safe and will be more effective if you alternate them every 2 weeks instead of using them at the same time each month. make sure the environment stays treated also to minimize what gets on him.

Are Tri-Heart Plus & Simparica good, affordable heartworm & flea meds?
