My puppy fell and hit her head. Is she concussed? What are symptoms?

Concussions can be tough to diagnose and can be very serious (just like in humans). At home you want to make sure he is protected from harm such as falling down the stairs. You should make sure he is eating and drinking (you may need to bring him the bowls and hand feed him). There may only be so much you can do and there may be treatment he needs to avoid further complications. To be safe, I recommend to have your pup examined.

Vomiting after an head trauma might be concerning. I recommend to bring her to the vet for a physical and neurological examinations to exclude brain damages (i.e. concussion). Please post again on the forum if you would like to discuss it further. I hope my answer was helpful.

The first question to answer is, if he lost his consciousness when he fell. Being 'knocked out' suggest brain trauma, concussion at least. If he was conscious at all times, then most likely the brain did not suffer any serious injury. Dogs have relatively small brains (compared to human), which are also well protected by the skull bones. Brain injuries are much less common in dogs than in human patients. So, my advice is : as long as Milo is looking normal, he is bright and alert, he is not vomiting, his pupils are of equal size, he is not in any obvious pain or discomfort you should monitor him at home. If he becomes lethargic, weak on legs, crying for no reason or vomiting you need to call your regular vets or your nearest emergency service asap.

Poor Sophie. I would monitor her and if she continue to be sleepy I would have her checked by your vet. Try to offer her a bit of food or her favorite toy and observe her reaction, check if she has balance, if she has appetite, if her attention level is the same compared to other days. IF kismet is eating,drinking, being active and using the restroom I would just recommend monitoring her closely at home. We do not typically diagnose concussions in veterinary medicine. Typically if a dog hits there head they are fine. My only concern with a chihuahua is that they can still have a open spot on there head. If they hit this region it can cause a seizure. If you feel like Kismet is acting lethargic or having seizure activity I would recommend taking her to an emergency clinic for observation. Other wise just monitor at home
