My puppy fell and is now very sleepy. Is she injured or concussed?

If she seems to be sleepy but you are able to wake her up, and if she seems to be breathing normally and walking without pain, then I think it is fine to monitor her at home. If you see any external signs of trauma like bleeding or swelling, or if she is so sleepy you can't get her up then I'd recommend seeing your vet.

If she is remaining sleepy, has poor balance or vomiting I would be concerned about a possible head injury and recommend she be assessed by a vet as soon as possible. Otherwise continue to monitor for food and fluid intake and ensure no rough play for the next 48 hours

I recommend monitoring her for lethargy, reduced appetite or evidence of pain (yelping when jumping or running, being pet in certain areas, or overall reduced activity). I always advise that if an abnormal sign or behavior persists, worsens or other signs develop to always have your pet evaluated by your veterinarian right away. The fall may have caused some soft tissue/bone injuries or even internal injuries that are causing her problems. Also, she could be suffering from something unrelated to the fall. Your vet can examine her after gathering a history and then advise you on diagnostics/treatment. Possible tests include fecal/blood/urine tests and x-rays. Good luck

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be due to pain or discomfort as he could have hurt himself. However, it could also be coincidental. If he is otherwise doing well without limping, I think it would be ok to monitor him for now. However, if he develops a limp or any other signs such as crying in pain, inappetence or continued lethargy, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Poor Louie! Keep a very close eye on him. If he appears dizzy or disorientated, has trouble walking, blood from the nose or ears, is painful, or is very lethargic, you must take him into a vet immediately.

When animals are sleepy after a hit on the head, which is the my biggest concern for what you are describing, it could be that they have a condition called 'cerebral edema'. Your vet will check for this by assessing your puppies mentation, pupil size and shape and responsiveness, blood pressure, heart rate, and the rest of his physical exam. This, if present, is very serious and sometimes can be fixed and sometimes cannot be fixed. Your vet, if they feel that cerebral edema is present, will give a drug called Mannitol, or will give a drug called 'Hypertonic Saline', to try to decrease this pressure. I am glad you brought Bentley to the vet, that is the best place for him. If you are concerned about Bentley then I recommend you call the clinic and get an update on Bentley, as we cannot know his prognosis without knowing exactly what is happening.
