My Shih Tzu poops while sleeping. What causes dog fecal incontinence?

It sounds like Trevor has fecal incontinence. This can have several causes, including nerve damage to the rectum and arthritis, which causes pain when posturing to defecate so they hold it longer than they should. Prostate enlargement can also cause some issues. I would recommend taking Trevor to the vet for a thorough evaluation. They will do a physical and neurologic exam to determine if there are any issues. They may recommend x-rays to look at the pelvis and bones around the based of the tail, and to determine who things look on the inside around the colon.

I would have Rocco examined by a veterinarian soon to rule out these possibilities above. I wouldn't say this is normal behavior, but it is common for senior dogs to develop fecal incontinence especially when sleeping. Most of the time there is not much to do although sometimes people try a diet change or probiotics. Some neurologic problems could also cause incontinence so if Millie has been having trouble walking or leaking urine I would recommend seeing your vet.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chutki. Fecal incontinence is not a typical side effect of antibiotics. I most commonly see this happen in older dogs who struggle with mobility. In this case, it is painful for them to posture to defecate normally. So the feces will simply fall out. Other dogs will have weakness in their anal sphincter as they age and no longer to be able to control their bowel movements. There is not an age included with Chutki's profile so I do not know if this is a possibility for her. I recommend discussing the problem with her veterinarian. I hope this information helps!

This is a very unusual case to have ongoing problems after the diarrhea is resolved. Sedation and anesthetic does result in all over body relaxation and chiropractic care and acupuncture can be very helpful in resolving any nerve control issues in such cases. A fiber and probiotic supplement such as fortiflora would also be recommended

This can be due to a neurological problem or aging changes. He also may be painful and not wanting to stand and hold the pooping position when outside. I am assuming that your Boston Terrier has a corkscrew tail. This is a spinal abnormality that can go hand in hand with nerve malfunction of the nerves that control the anal sphincter. There is a possibility that when Valki is completely relaxed or walking she cannot hold in the poop all the time. Anal sac problems can also cause this, and a few other conditions. I suggest a visit to your vet to determine the cause of the fecal incontinence and possibly help the situation with some medication to strengthen the sphincter.
