Why is my dog pooping while sleeping after a dental cleaning?

Poor Blue! The anaesthetic combined with the pain of the teeth clean can really upset their tummies. You could try feeding a diet of plain chicken and rice for a few days, but I'd urge you to give your vet a call. They shluld be able to prescribe you a gastroprotectant liquid that can help settle the tummy. If the diarrohea dies not settle it will need to be treated too.

I am sorry to hear about your recent troubles with Nora's health. I have certainly heard of lots of different side effects long term from any sort of anesthetic procedure, the most common actually being changes to behavior. I have definitely also heard of animals that have come blind or deaf from anesthetic (though usually it is temporarily) episodes. While I can not say for sure what has happened in this case, I would definitely want to completely rule out the possibility of a coincidence first since we are dealing with such an elderly patient. I imagine that with an older patient, preoperative blood work was obtained and analyzed prior to placing her under anesthesia. If this was completely normal, I would definitely recommend having some x-rays and ultrasound imagine procured to rule out the presence of any sort of malignant process or signs of organ failure. If you are able to do this with at least a relative amount of certainty, this still doesn't resolve the issue. I would considering adding more fiber to the diet and a probiotic to see if this helps solidify the fecal material while investigating the cause. I don't want to sound grim, but at nearly 16 years of age there are a number of sinister things within the body that could be responsible for Nora's diarrhea unfortunately. The anesthetic event could have certainly compromised the immune system in such a way to make her susceptible to something that may have been lying in wait or brewing slowly. I am glad to hear she seems to be feeling well. Occasionally, the Gi tract will have a mild temporary change during/after anesthesia which can result in the changes in the stool that you saw. I would recommend that you feed her a bland diet (boiled chicken and white rice) for the next couple of days. Dental cleanings are typically performed under anesthesia in petd because they can be uncomfortable and sharp objects are used to remove tartar in the mouth. Depending on the level of dental disease, it is possible that the dental cleaning was uncomfortable for him and could cause a great deal of stress if significant restraint was required. Stress can cause stomach upset including bloody diarrhea. Given the severity of his signs, I am glad that you had him seen by veterinarian. If he does not improve with the prescribed treatment, I would recommend scheduling a recheck examination. I would also recommend checking with your veterinarian about ways to manage dental health in the future.

Anaesthetic can definitely cause gastrointestinal upset such as you describe, mild vomiting and diarrhea is also common. A probiotic such as canikur or fortiflora can be very helpful to rebalance the bowel and settle the system

Violet's diarrhea is probably from the recent change in food and possibly the antibiotics she was on. For some dogs canned food is too rich and is difficult for them to digest. If she will only eat canned food you could consider feeding her a low residue prescription diet (Hill's i/d, Royal Canin GI low fat). You can purchase these from your vet. Since Violet has been having diarrhea for a longer period of time she may have an imbalance of the normal bacteria in her gut. When this happens dogs usually need antibiotics and probiotics to help get everything back in balance. And finally, I always recommend having a fecal performed in cases of diarrhea to rule out intestinal parasites. I hope this helps. Best of luck.

I'm so sorry this happened. It is not likely an overdose of anesthetic. If that was the case he would have passed away during the dental procedure. It is more likely that he threw a blood clot post-anesthesia. The only way to know for sure would be to have a necropsy (autopsy) done on him.
