Why is my senior dog losing bowel control and having accidents?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 11 years and 10 months old

He seems to have loss control of his poop. He. Poops in bed at night and I don't think he knows it. He can just be walking and poop will come out.

This can be due to a neurological problem or aging changes. He also may be painful and not wanting to stand and hold the pooping position when outside. I recommend a veterinary exam to see if he’s painful or if there is a neurological problem. They may try him on pain medication. Acupuncture can also improve fecal incontinence sometimes. I am so sorry Harlie is going through this.

I would recommend taking Harlie to the veterinarian. This could be due to arthritis in Harlie's back. When dogs have arthritis and are painful they may not be able to posture long enough to fully empty their bowels. If this happens they can release their bowels in their sleep or in the house.

It can also be a neurologic problem.

Your veterinarian will be able to perform a physical examination and see if they feel it is more arthritis or something more.

If it is arthritis there is medication that can help Harlie feel more comfortable to be able to empty her bowels better outside.

Hi there. Unfortunately there isn't much that can be done for that. In most dogs it's due to some sort of nerve compression from aging changes in the skeletal system.

You can try acupuncture, in some dogs that has helped. You can also do a diaper to keep things clean and just make sure it's changed often.

Hi Bill, I'm so sorry that you are having this problem with Champ. Unfortunately, we do see neurological problems in older dogs that can result in fecal incontinence where they are unaware when they have to defecate and/or unable to control it. There are not a lot of good treatment options for this condition. However, since you know that Champ has bad legs, I would start with discussing pain medication with your veterinarian. Sometimes if we are able to improve the pain in their rear legs, they seem to have an easier time squatting to defecate and will have less accidents. Why is my senior Shih Tzu suddenly having bladder and bowel accidents?

Hi there and thanks for posting! Loss of control of bladder can be due to a Urinary Tract Infection, spinal diseases, as well as older aging changes. I would have Rocco examined by a veterinarian soon to rule out these possibilities above. Why is my senior dog dropping small poops randomly around the house?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. Elderly pets can experience fecal incontinence where the feces will fall put without the dog realizing it. Other times, the pet has severe arthritis and it is painful to assume the position for defecation. This leads the pet to either avoid defecating outside or not going the full amount. Fecal and urinary incontinence can be caused by many things including problems with the nervous system or nerves innervating these organs due to spinal cord problems, vetebrae problems, enlargement of organs near the back of the abdomen, tumors, anal region problems, urinary incontinence secondary to her being spayed, etc. So I would highly advise a trip to your veterinarian and let them take a thorough history. They will perform a physical exam and most likely a rectal exam and then advise a set of diagnostics to try to solve these problems. Blood work, fecal tests, x-rays and ultrasound are all initial possible tests to be performed. Once diagnostics are performed the problems can then be addressed. This can be due to a lack of muscle tone or from a medical problem such as diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colitis, liver or kidney disease, or Cushing’s disease. He does need to see a vet to get this caused diagnosed so he can be treated. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants.
