My dog is leaking poop while sleeping. Is it due to antibiotics?

It sounds like Blacky had a urinary tract infection, which sometimes can become recurrent or resistant and difficult to treat. His urine may need to be cultured again to see if the infection has resolved. Sometimes bladder stones or polyps, or diseases like Cushing's or kidney disease could also cause urine leakage. Finally, he may have urinary incontinence due to a neurologic issue and require medication to help stop the leakage. I would recommend talking to your veterinarian to see if there are any additional tests they would recommend.

I wouldn't say this is normal behavior, but it is common for senior dogs to develop fecal incontinence especially when sleeping. Most of the time there is not much to do although sometimes people try a diet change or probiotics. Some neurologic problems could also cause incontinence so if Millie has been having trouble walking or leaking urine I would recommend seeing your vet.

This morning not uncommon and is often related to muscle weakness and poor nerve control in this area. You should get your vet to check for any physical reason such as polyps. Acupuncture, chiropractic care and a high fiber diet can all help improve bowel control also

Yes I would be concerned. It's not normal to have fecal incontinence especially in a young dog. This is a sign or a neurological problem. Frenchies are prone to intervertebral disc disease and this may be an early sign of a problem. I would also have your veterinarian check Peppa's anal sacs as they may be full and leaking the stains. They will do X-rays of the spine and do a neurological assessment to determine the reason for the incontinence. Hi Bill, I'm so sorry that you are having this problem with Champ. Unfortunately, we do see neurological problems in older dogs that can result in fecal incontinence where they are unaware when they have to defecate and/or unable to control it. There are not a lot of good treatment options for this condition. However, since you know that Champ has bad legs, I would start with discussing pain medication with your veterinarian. Sometimes if we are able to improve the pain in their rear legs, they seem to have an easier time squatting to defecate and will have less accidents. No, fecal incontinence is very unlikely to be present. The signs you are describing are only related to the gastrointestinal infection which will need a full course of antibiotics to be cured. I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice for 4-5 days. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. This is a very unusual case to have ongoing problems after the diarrhea is resolved. Sedation and anesthetic does result in all over body relaxation and chiropractic care and acupuncture can be very helpful in resolving any nerve control issues in such cases. A fiber and probiotic supplement such as fortiflora would also be recommended
