Is a thick vein in my chihuahua's eye normal after a scratch?

Based on what I can see in the photo, this looks like a normal blood vessel :) It's very common for dogs to have one or more enlarged veins in the white part of the eye, called "vortex veins" - these are normal, and are responsible for draining different types of fluid from inside the eye. As long as Delilah doesn't have any redness, squinting, or discharge from the eye, there should be no reason for concern.

Based on the picture, Peggy's blood vessel looks most like a vortex vein, which is a normal variation in some dogs. Vortex veins do not go away, but they also do not cause problems or require any treatment. However, I can't say definitively that this is indeed a benign vortex vein without examining Peggy to be sure that she doesn't have any other ocular changes. I would certainly take Peggy to a veterinarian right away for an exam and have a plan in place with the breeder if your vet feels that she may have other bigger issues after their exam. If Scarlet is squinting or if her eye has discharge I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian. The blood vessels in the eye can become larger when dogs are excited or when they have eye infection or inflammation. If just the one blood vessel is affected and she doesn't seem uncomfortable you probably don't need to intervene unless the redness gets worse.

She is very young, there is a good chance that it will go away on it's own eventually but it is impossible to know for sure, and even if it doesn't go away, it's not likely to cause any medical problems.

This usually happens with trauma to the eye or if the dog has been choked. If it is just a burst blood vessel, it should resolve with time, like a bruise. If there is any swelling, squinting, cloudiness of the clear part of the eye or discharge, I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian to make sure there is not something more serious that requires treatment.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pepples. The pictures you submitted are very helpful. It appears as though her conjuctiva (the tissue under her eyelids) is very red and swollen. She also appears to have cloudiness to her cornea (the surface or her eye) and tiny vessels growing across it. She will need to see her veterinarian to determine the cause of these changes. She could be suffering from a corneal ulcer (scratch to the surface of the eye). There is also a condition that is common in her breed that causes decreased tear production. Once she has a diagnosis, treatment can be started and she will begin to feel better. Good luck!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Butters. I do recommend that she sees her veterinarian again as her eye still sounds painful. Her veterinarian may prescribe an eye medication to help or even check the eye for a scratch across the surface. The sutures could have irritated her eye a bit. In the meantime, place an E-collar on her to prevent her from scratching and causing self trauma. I hope this information helps!
